A Brief Overview Under the supervision of the department’s manager and a supervising physician, the sonographer provides high‑quality sonographic procedures on patients of all ages using advanced ultrasound diagnostic equipment. Responsibilities include performing vascular studies (peripheral vascular, abdominal, carotid duplex scans), echocardiographic procedures, and collaborating with residents and students. The sonographer assists in data collection for medical diagnosis without supplanting physician decision‑making, maintains equipment, documents procedures, and records billing information. Locations Stanford Health Care – Emeryville, CA What You Will Do Document observations and produce diagnostic images for physician interpretation. Maintain ultrasound equipment and accessories; report problems to Lead Tech and supervisor. Explain the examination process to patients and provide instructions throughout the procedure. Operate diagnostic ultrasound equipment, process images, and present completed sonograms to the physician. Participate in maintaining research records and evaluate new equipment for potential departmental use. Assist in training residents and ultrasound students. Perform complex sonographic procedures to detect abnormalities such as masses, abscesses, and stones. Carry out infection prevention techniques (CIDEX testing, neutralization, disposal) and proper probe cleaning. Conduct basic Doppler scans (hepatic/portal veins, venous studies, renal transplant, etc.) with proper technique and documentation. Utilize 2D gray‑scale, color Doppler, pulsed wave scanners, BP cuffs, sphygmomanometers, stethoscope, analog strip chart recorder, segmental blood pressure machine, and handheld CW Doppler. Perform exams including peripheral vascular duplex, abdominal duplex, segmental blood pressure and exercise testing, carotid studies, and other requested physiology exams. Review patient medical history in chart information systems and reload prior exams for comparison. Use ancillary equipment (Kinetdx, PACS) appropriately and ensure adequate image views and timely completion of exams. Education Qualifications License or certification meeting the required qualifications. Experience Qualifications At least five (5) years of progressively responsible, directly related work experience. Two ARDMS credentials (any two). Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Judgment and informed decision‑making. Effective oral and written communication. Ability to build relationships with diverse groups, including all staff levels. Follow written and oral instructions accurately. Interpret physician instructions and patient records to determine appropriate procedures. Perform general abdominal, small‑parts, OB‑GYN, and limited vascular sonography on varied patient populations. Perform vascular exams: segmental occlusion pressures, ABI’s, carotid and venous dopplers, vein mapping, and abdominal dopplers. Team player and collaborative operator. Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, congenital/acquired pathology related to ultrasound. Computer systems and software used in functional area. PACS network principles and other electronic image processing systems. Ultrasound physics and tissue propagation fundamentals. Safety principles and procedures for ultrasound operations. Ultrasound diagnostic procedures and equipment operations. Licenses and Certifications ARDMS – Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer. RVT – Registered Vascular Technologist.
