Accounting Associate

Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Accounting Associate for a full-time, temp-to-hire opportunity in Laguna Beach, CA. This fully in-office role supports the day-to-day accounting and financial operations for a real estate portfolio and related management entities.

This is an excellent opportunity for a detail-oriented accounting professional with strong Yardi experience who wants to grow beyond data entry into reconciliations, month-end close support, property financial reporting, construction accounting, and lender draw documentation. The role offers a clear career path from Accounting Associate to Staff Accountant, Property Accountant, and Senior Property Accountant, with the opportunity to eventually own the full monthly accounting cycle for an assigned portfolio.

Key Responsibilities

- Process accounts payable through Yardi Pay Scan and Yardi, including invoice coding, vendor records, W-9s, approvals, payment support, and weekly check run assistance.
- Manage accounts receivable activity, including tenant ledgers, charges, payments, past-due follow-up, monthly AR reporting, and receivables reconciliation to the general ledger.
- Support property and management company accounting, including management fees, leasing commissions, construction management fees, asset management fees, reimbursements, intercompany expenses, and operating expenses.
- Perform monthly bank and credit card reconciliations, maintain reconciliation workbooks, match transactions to receipts, and resolve discrepancies.
- Assist with month-end close, including general ledger review, account reconciliations, journal entries, prepaids, intercompany transactions, AP/AR reconciliations, and financial reporting.
- Prepare wire request packages, organize construction invoices, track project expenditures, assist with lender draw packages, and reconcile draws to accounting records.

Compensation and Benefits

- Salary range: $70,000 to $75,000 per year.
- Job type: Temp-to-hire.
- Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM.
- Work arrangement: Fully in-office.
- Location: Laguna Beach, CA.

Required Qualifications and Skills

- Support day-to-day accounting operations for multiple real estate properties, entities, and management companies.
- Assist with AP, AR, reconciliations, month-end close, property financial reporting, construction accounting, and lender draw documentation.
- Research discrepancies, review coding accuracy, identify missing expenses or unusual balances, and help ensure accurate property-level financials.
- Prepare and maintain accounting documentation, reports, workbooks, and support packages in accordance with internal controls.

- 5+ years of hands-on Yardi experience, including AP, AR, general ledger review, property and unit coding, and report generation.
- Strong understanding of accounting principles, financial statements, balance sheets, income statements, and budget-to-actual reporting.
- Advanced Excel skills and the ability to maintain accurate reconciliation workbooks and financial schedules.
- Prior experience with accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank and credit card reconciliations, and month-end close support.
- Ability to manage multiple entities, properties, deadlines, and priorities while working independently.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to follow up professionally on outstanding items.
- High attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to investigate discrepancies rather than simply process transactions.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality when handling financial records, banking information, vendor data, and company funds.

Preferred Qualifications

- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, completed or in progress.
- Real estate accounting experience.
- Experience with construction invoices, lien releases, project expenditures, lender draws, reserves, and draw package preparation.
- Experience supporting monthly property financials for a real estate portfolio.
