The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) is the state agency responsible for conservation of the state's natural resources. DFG exercises responsibility over the Commonwealth's marine and freshwater fisheries, wildlife, plants, and natural communities, and provides outdoor recreation opportunities to the public. MassWildlife is responsible for the conservation of freshwater fish and wildlife in the Commonwealth, including endangered plants and animals. MassWildlife restores, protects, and manages land for wildlife to thrive and for people to enjoy.

The Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife are seeking two (2) Seasonal Wildlife Technician Contractors. These 6-month seasonal wildlife technicians will be hired to work on various wildlife-related projects collecting data / samples, entering data, conducting surveys in the field and interacting with the public. The work will be conducted in coordination with the Deer & Moose Project Leader, Upland Game Project Leader, and Black Bear Project Leader. Some weekend work may be required. Technicians will be required to travel throughout Massachusetts. State vehicles will be available.

Specific duties include:

• Assist Project Leaders with various field work and sample collection, particularly for CWD monitoring.
• Assist with entering CWD data into the SOP4CWD Warehouse database
• Assist with the development and implementation of education and outreach materials and programs related to deer, bear, or other Massachusetts wildlife.
• Assist Project Leaders, district biologists and technicians conducting surveys, collecting samples, and recording data.
• Assist Project Leaders and Community Engagement Biologist developing outreach materials, identifying and locating recipients, and delivering materials.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications required at hire include:

• Working knowledge of biology, mammalogy, ornithology, ecology, and related sciences.
• Previous work conducting wildlife surveys
• Experience identifying various species of waterfowl
• Basic map and compass skills, ability to use handheld GPS units, experience with GIS applications highly desirable.
• Experience communicating wildlife management and research (both orally and written) to the public and professionals.
• Knowledge of scientific research methodologies (hypothesis testing, research design, data collection and data analysis).
• Experience using computer programs for organizing and communicating wildlife-related data (Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint, GIS, etc).
• Ability and willingness to work long hours in the field under challenging conditions including but not limited to: continual arduous physical activity across uneven terrain, exposure to ticks, regular exposure to and movement through thorny vegetation and poison ivy, working in cold temperatures as well as varying levels of precipitation.

Qualifications acquired on the job include:

• Increased knowledge of the above
• Knowledge of the laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, guidelines, etc. governing assigned unit activities
• Knowledge of the types and uses of agency forms
• Knowledge of the types and availability of public or private organizations for conducting laboratory tests.

License and/or Certification Requirements:

• Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator's License, or equivalent, and an acceptable driving record with the ability to travel to check stations and field sites during the duration of the position.
