Director, RN - NICU Neonatal Service Line

- GENERAL SUMMARY
- The Director of the NICU/Neonatal Service Line facilitates a collaborative partnership with the NICU, NNP/PA program, Neonatal Breastfeeding Medicine, Fetal Diagnostic Center, and Neonatal Follow-up Clinic. The Director provides leadership and direction for both inpatient and outpatient neonatal services. The Director is accountable for overall operations, direction and delivery of patient care that promotes the safety and well-being of all patients on a twenty-four-hour basis. A high level of independence in performance of the role and/or solution of problems is expected, however, demonstrated cooperation and collaboration is equally essential for successful functioning. Reports to the Vice President of Patient Care Services.
- ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Responsibilities include but are not limited to implementing evidence-based nursing practice to achieve operational excellence, facilitating respectful and productive interdisciplinary collaborations, promoting and monitoring a culture of efficient, results and customer-oriented services, as well as coordinating staff educational opportunities and certification processes.
- Implements nursing policies and procedures that conform to current standards of nursing practice, CHKDHS philosophy and operational policies while maintaining compliance with state and federal rules and regulations.
- Communicates and interprets policies and procedures to nursing staff.
- Participates in meetings with other nursing directors to discuss operational and other issues.
- Ensures the proper staffing of assigned units and, either directly or through delegation to managers, is responsible for scheduling, training and developing, and evaluating the performance of nurses and others. Proactively develops positive employee relations and recognition. Promotes teamwork, mutual respect and effective communication.
- Initiates corrective action as needed when individual performance does not meet expectations.
- Provides leadership and direction for both inpatient and outpatient Neonatology services to include the Neonatal Breastfeeding Medicine Clinic, NNP/PA program, Neonatal Consults for the Fetal Diagnostic Center, and Neonatal Follow-up Clinic.
- Develops processes to promote quality of service, grow service lines, budgetary compliance and provides oversight to those working in these areas.
- Ensures that each nurse is properly certified and abides by established standards of care and with laws and regulations.
- Establishes and maintains appropriate standards of practice for assigned areas, in accordance with CHKDHS policies and external regulatory guidelines.
- Collaborates with physicians in the proper treatment of patients.
- Reviews daily and other reports from the units to monitor and ensure timely and effective responses to issues and problems.
- Develops and recommends annual budgets for assigned areas.
- Development of processes to promote quality of service, budgetary compliance and overall operations of the departments. Provides clear direction regarding budget expectations, setting performance expectations and desired outcomes.
- Contributes ideas and suggestions to improve methods and productivity in assigned units while maintaining high quality patient care.
- Mentors and coaches' managers and nursing staff, either directly or through managers, to ensure professional development.
- Collaborates with other departments, such as I.S. Infection Control, Quality, and others, in enhancing safety, process improvement and other initiatives.
- Monitors operations and quality standards to assure compliance with governmental regulations and the established standards of accrediting agencies, including federal research regulations.
- Maintains appropriate standards of practice and standards of care throughout the Neonatology service areas.
- Leads, manages, coaches, and trains a team or department, provides guidance, support, and mentors to ensure optimal performance and productivity.
- Oversees the recruitment, hiring, team/department orientation, performance appraisals and disciplinary actions including up to termination processes for a team or department.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS
- Current Virginia state license as a Registered Nurse or Registered Nurse holding a valid Compact State license.
- MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Master's degree in Nursing required; may be substituted with a Master's in Business Administration, Public Health, Healthcare Administration, or related field provided the candidate also possesses a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (Candidates currently enrolled in a Master's program will be considered. Individual must complete program within one year).
- Minimum of five years of progressive nursing leadership experience in a setting committed to collaborative decision making and team development required.
- Professional knowledge of areas of responsibility to include theory, practice and administration in order to direct planning and implementation.
- Requires analytical skills necessary to organize and oversee work of subordinates.
- WORKING CONDITIONS
- Expected to work in a patient care environment with minimal exposure to environmental hazards such as, but not limited to, excessive noise, dust, or extremes in temperatures. Exposure to communicable diseases and moderately adverse working conditions due to the need to perform certain patient care activities can be expected.
