Heavy Equipment OperatorThis requisition expires on August 22, 2026, but may close earlier if the position is filled prior to the expiration date. Responsible for operation of heavy equipment to maintain and construct streets.Essential Functions and Other Important DutiesEssential Functions:Operates heavy complex motorized equipment over 26,000 pounds (front-end loader, track and rubber tire loaders, dump truck, backhoe, motor grader, track loaders, steel wheel compactors and scrapers)Performs less skilled tasks associated with maintenance and construction of streets, such as patching, lowering manholes, putting in drainage pipesInspects and checks equipment before and after use, performs minor maintenance activities and reports exceptional problems to supervisorFrequently assumes crew leader responsibilities in coordinating the activities of maintenance persons, helpers, and/or other equipment operationsHelps train other operators and assists technical staff such as laying asphalt, drainage pipe, putting lime or bulk cement in sub-gradeMay perform other skilled tasks, some of which may require knowledge of a specific field, for example, drainage, water and wastewaterOccasionally confers with customers regarding service problems and reports information obtained to supervisorMaintains regular and punctual on-site attendanceAdditional Duties:Performs other duties as assignedJob RequirementsMinimum Qualifications/Acceptable Equivalency:High school diploma or GED equivalentThree years' experience in heavy equipment in the construction industry or related fieldORAny combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the jobCore Competencies:Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writingAbility to form and maintain effective relationships with coworkers and customersAbility to work outdoorsPreferences:Bilingual in Spanish and EnglishPrior three years' experience in street construction and maintenance.Knowledge of the field of maintenance and emergency repair of heavy equipmentKnowledge of methods, techniques, and safety precautions involved in the operation of heavy and complex equipmentConditions of Employment:Must possess and maintain a valid Class "A" CDL driver's license with tanker endorsements OR must possess a valid Class C driver license with a good driving record and the ability to obtain a Class A CDL with Tank Vehicle endorsement within six (6) months of employmentMust pass a drug test, driver's license check, criminal history background check, and social security number verification checkMust pass a physical examinationMust be able to work overtime as requested and be on-call for the department during extreme weather and rotation of schedule on nights/weekendsEnvironmental Factors and Conditions/Physical RequirementsPhysical Requirements: Overall Strength Demands: The italicized word describes the overall strength demand of the functions performed by the incumbent during a typical workday.Sedentary – lifting no more than 10 poundsLight – lifting no more than 20 pounds; carry up to 10 poundsMedium – lifting no more than 50 pounds, carry up to 25 poundsHeavy – lifting no more than 100 pounds, carry up to 50 pounds Very Heavy – lifting more than 100 pounds, carry more than 50 poundsPhysical Demand Codes: The following describes if the incumbent is expected to exert the following physical demands during a typical workday and the overall frequency.
