Location:  Santa Cruz, CA

Job Type:  Full-Time, Non-exempt, 32 hours per week (4 days per week, 8 hours per day) Evening and Weekend availability required

The Santa Cruz BCycle Lead Mechanic will proactively manage the overall health of the e-bike fleet. This role reports directly to the Operations Manager and is responsible for oversight and training of other staff related to e-bike care and maintenance. This role also serves as a public face of BCycle in the field; therefore, a positive and friendly attitude is an absolute necessity! This unique position also allows for a deeper focus on e-bikes. Core Responsibilities:

• Lead a team of Bicycle Mechanics.
• Perform duties associated with Bicycle Mechanics on a regular basis.
• Motivate the team to perform safely, efficiently, and accurately and give feedback where appropriate.
• Work under the guidance of the Operations Manager to identify, develop and implement improvements.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Assemble, maintain, and repair fleet of bicycles for bike share system.
• Maintain a clean, efficient and well-organized workshop.
• Creative problem solving with mechanics and other team members.
• Aggregates feedback from mechanics and leadership to make informed SOP decisions in consultation with Operations Manager and Tech Ops regarding bike maintenance and best practices.
• Analyze/audit current inventories and parts usage trends to forecast purchasing and provide recommendations for bilk purchases.
• Contribute to creation and maintenance of SOPs to standardize processes, products, and tools as necessary.
• Assist with the hiring and training as needed.
• Complete annual refurbishments on fleet.
• Conduct monthly safety checks on the fleet in warehouse and outside.
• Ride a bicycle to perform in-field repair and inspection work.
• Diligently maintain accurate work orders for all work performed.
• Follow procedural guidelines and company policies for all work performed.
• While in the field, interact with bike share passholders and the public in a friendly and professional manner.
• Assist in the assembly and programming of new bikes as our system expands.
• Maintain and repair mechanical and electronic components of bikes as needed to manufacturer specifications.
• While performing field work, communicate with Operations Manager regarding locations and condition of equipment, respond to Operations Manager in accordance with company's communication policy.
• Communicate with other staff and supervisors to affect improvements.
• Perform spot inspections of mechanic work.
• Ensure that bicycle-related company and service levels are met by Bicycle Mechanics.
• Manage inventory levels for tools and parts; request new parts and tools as needed.
• Receive and allocate inventory as necessary.
• Ensure bike and parts cycle counts are being performed.
• Develop team to improve professional goals and meet or exceed performance expectations.
• Contribute to positive, open, transparent and respectful communication within the team.
• Communicate with Operations Manager regarding any e-bike or facility issues.
• Receive training from the Operations Manager on current best practices, procedures, and repairs. Train the team on those procedures and ensure accountability and follow up.
• Coordinate with Operations Manager to or to adapt and train team on new procedures.
• Frequently collaborate with the Lead Field Techs on issues that affect staff and interdepartmental operations.

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

• Valid driver's license and a clean driving record.
• Excitement, interest in bike sharing.
• Bicycle mechanic experience required, hands-on, technical experience necessary.
• Ability to manage bicycle repair schedule, oversee, and train others.
• Ability to manage a repair schedule and inventory.
• Certification from a recognized bicycle program or equivalent experience.
• Proven technical and mechanical aptitude, innovation, and critical thinking.
• Strong leadership, communications and interpersonal skills; ability to motivate a team to perform effectively, efficiently, safely while finding joy and meaning in the work.
• Ability to adapt to changes in the work environment, manage competing demands, and deal with frequent change, delays or unexpected events.
• Organized thinkers, with the ability to self-direct under a high-pressure environment with changing deadlines.
• A strong sense of safety for everyday tasks.

Physical Requirements and Special Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. 

• Frequently bend, stoop, and twist throughout the day.
• Occasionally drive company vehicles.
• Requires the ability to regularly lift objects up to 65 lbs. and carry objects of this weight for distances up to 150 feet
• Requires the ability to perform work while standing for prolonged periods of time.  
• Repetitive motion required of the wrists, hands, or fingers occasionally throughout the workday.
• Requires working and riding a bicycle outdoors in various temperatures including rain, cold and heat conditions.  
• Comfortable with working in busy outdoor urban environments. 
• Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance in accordance with company and department policy.
• This is a full-time position expected to work 32 hours per week (4 days per week, 8 hours per day). Some hours outside of this, including evenings and weekends, may be required.
• This role requires the ability to speak clearly so listeners can understand, understand the speech of another person, see details of objects that are less than a few feet away, stand or sit for several hours straight at a time.
