Job Title: Welder and Fabricator
Job Description

This role focuses on independently and efficiently fitting, fabricating, and welding ornamental and structural steel and aluminum components. You will primarily use MIG welding, with additional exposure to Flux Core and other welding processes, while interpreting construction drawings and working closely with a cross-functional team to deliver high-quality, on-time projects.

Responsibilities

• Fit, fabricate, and weld ornamental steel and aluminum components independently and efficiently.
• Perform MIG welding as a primary process and use Flux Core and SMAW welding as needed.
• Lay out structural steel members such as wide flanges, hollow structural sections, and related components.
• Interpret architectural and structural details from construction drawings, blueprints, schematics, and work orders.
• Carry out structural steel fabrication tasks, including measuring, cutting, fitting, and assembly.
• Use grinding and sanding tools to finish and prepare materials and welds.
• Maintain a philosophy of continuous improvement and actively seek opportunities to enhance processes and quality.
• Demonstrate willingness to learn new techniques, tools, and procedures.
• Work closely and collaboratively with all individuals in the department and across multiple departments.
• Maintain a strong focus on internal customers, particularly shipping, to ensure smooth workflow.
• Ensure crane reports are completed accurately on a daily basis and submitted on time.
• Help ensure that established process flowcharts and procedures are followed consistently.
• Encourage teammates to speak up, share ideas, and support one another’s success.
• Keep safety at the forefront of daily activities and promote a safety-minded culture.
• Apply strong attention to detail and numerical accuracy when reading and working from blueprints and measurements.
• Problem-solve and multi-task effectively in a fast-paced production environment.
• Ensure material is processed and delivered to customers on time and according to quality standards.
• Operate an overhead crane safely and efficiently for material handling.
• Drive a forklift safely to move, load, and unload materials.
• Communicate clearly and professionally with team members and other departments to coordinate work and resolve issues.

• 4–5 years of welding and fabrication experience, including structural steel fabrication.
• Strong MIG welding experience; ability to produce consistent, high-quality welds.
• Experience with Flux Core welding preferred.
• SMAW welding experience.
• Ability to lay out structural steel members such as wide flanges and hollow structural sections.
• Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, architectural and structural drawings, schematics, work orders, and quality documents.
• Ability to use grinding and sanding tools safely and effectively.
• Strong numerical skills and ability to work accurately with measurements.
• Demonstrated ability to make decisions quickly and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
• Organized, highly detail-oriented, and self-motivated approach to work.
• Ability to work effectively within a team setting and communicate with multiple departments.
• Commitment to safety and OSHA-compliant work practices.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 75 lbs unassisted and place materials above chest height up to 75 lbs.
• Dependability and strong organizational skills.
• Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and quality documents.
• Ability to pass a post-offer non-DOT physical and musculoskeletal assessment.
• Ability to pass a post-offer non-DOT drug screen.

• Flux Core welding experience.
• TIG welding experience.
• Experience operating an overhead crane in a fabrication or industrial environment.
• Experience driving a forklift for material handling.
• Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement and process optimization.
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to encourage and support teammates.
• Comfort working in changing environments, including an upcoming move to a new facility.

Work Environment

This is a full-time, on-site role with a typical schedule of 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with regular extensions to 3:30 p.m. or 4:30 p.m. as needed and a usual 6-hour shift on Saturdays. Weekly hours realistically average 45–50 hours, providing consistent overtime opportunities. The position will initially be based at the current facility for approximately 4–6 months, which is described as older and cold inside, requiring comfort working in a less modern environment. The role will then transition to a brand-new, well-appointed facility designed to be much more comfortable and efficient. The work is physically demanding and takes place in a fabrication shop environment with heavy materials, overhead cranes, forklifts, welding equipment, grinding and sanding tools, and structural steel components. Appropriate workwear suitable for welding and fabrication, including protective gear and safety equipment, is required to ensure safe operation in this industrial setting.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Waukegan, IL.

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $30.00/hr.
