Generator TechnicianThe Generator Technician is responsible for the reliable operation, maintenance, exercising, testing, troubleshooting, and repair of mixed-fuel emergency/standby generators (diesel and natural gas), automatic transfer switches (ATS), and associated controls and electrical connections across The George Washington University campuses. The role helps ensure continuity of operations and life-safety readiness across campus facilities, coordinating with internal trades and external vendors as needed. The work schedule is Monday-Friday from 7:00 am to 4:00 pm to include a Holiday and Weekend Rotating schedule. Rotating on-call and response during outages/emergencies is expected.Operate, maintain, exercise, test, and repair emergency generators, ATS/transfer equipment, and associated electrical connections across campus.Perform scheduled preventive and predictive maintenance on generators and automatic transfer switchgear, document results and deficiencies.Conduct operational checks (starting systems, batteries/chargers, heaters, fuel systems, alarms, and controls) and support load testing/load bank testing when required by campus program.Troubleshoot generator system issues; determine root cause, develop repair plans, identify parts, and prioritize work to minimize downtime.Perform electronic diagnostics and testing on generator controls and related equipment; resolve standard and complex issues efficiently.Repair and service diesel generator systems and components (examples include fuel systems, battery chargers, pre-heaters, and standby controls) and maintain clear maintenance reports.Inspect electrical and generator system equipment/facilities to assess condition, identify maintenance needs, and recommend repair priorities.Maintain accurate records (CMMS work orders, test logs, inspection reports, vendor service documentation).Coordinate and communicate with generator vendors/service providers; assist with scheduling outages, escorting contractors, and verifying completed work.Follow hazardous energy control / lockout-tagout (LOTO) practices and participate in required training to prevent unexpected energization or release of stored energy during service/maintenance.Perform work consistent with recognized electrical safe work practices addressing shock and arc-flash hazards, aligned with NFPA70E concepts used broadly for workplace electrical safety programs.Support campus emergency power system performance objectives consistent with the purpose/scope of NFPA110 (EPSS performance requirements including power sources, transfer equipment, controls, and accessories).Diesel and/or natural gas standby generators (multiple kW ranges), day tanks/bulk fuel interfaces. ATS/ transfer equipment, switchgear interfaces, engine controls, annunciators, telemetry/remote monitoring. Battery systems/chargers, jacket water heaters, block heaters, engine sensors, breakers and protective relays. Portable or fixed load banks (as part of the campus testing program).Performs other work-related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.Minimum Qualifications: Qualified candidates will hold a high school diploma/GED plus 1.5 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications: Certifications/training (as applicable) Electrical Generator Systems Association (EGSA) certification (preferred). Electrical safety training (arc-flash/shock awareness) consistent with NFPA70E program expectations. Lockout/Tagout training consistent with OSHA hazardous energy control expectations. [Optional: confined space, respirator, hazmat awareness, etc. — per campus EHS requirements]Preferred Qualifications: A top candidate will have demonstrated experience in generator maintenance, troubleshooting engines, fuel systems, and high-voltage operations. Demonstrated experience maintaining and troubleshooting generators or industrial power equipment is desired. Proficiency in reading schematics and interpret wiring diagrams, service manuals, panels, and meters is preferred. Strong documentation skills (clear maintenance reports, accurate logs).
