Hours: Assigned tour of duty hours Salary Range: $48.82 – $89.19 per hour (DOE) Job Overview The staff RN is a licensed professional who assumes responsibility and accountability for a group of patients for a designated time frame. This individual provides safe, quality care to these patients utilizing the nursing process as the basis for clinical practice. Prerequisites BSN preferred. Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of Washington. Successful completion of a graduate nurse residency program orientation or six months’ experience as a Registered Nurse. AHA BLS for healthcare providers required. Preferred for Advancement to Charge Nurse Role BSN. Two years’ practice in clinical nursing/leadership in area of responsibility preferred. Unit‑specific prerequisites as outlined in the addendum. Physical and Mental Demands Must be able to provide safe patient handling as defined in VMC’s Safe Patient Handling guidelines and policies. Includes lifting from the floor to overhead levels, carrying items up to 40 pounds, operating patient lifting equipment, stooping, bending, reaching, crouching, squatting, standing and walking for extensive periods, and using manual and finger dexterity and eye‑hand coordination. Requires normal vision and hearing, color discrimination, and the ability to reach from floor to overhead levels. Essential Responsibilities and Competencies Assesses, guides, directs, and facilitates workflow on the unit; steps in as charge nurse when required. Creates staff assignments reflecting patient acuity, continuity of care, staff competency, and need for admissions, transfers, and discharges. Mentors staff, float, and agency personnel regarding unit/department/hospital policies, procedures, standards, and goals. Integrates new staff and agency staff into unit culture. Acts as a leader, role model, and clinical resource for unit staff. Demonstrates safe use of patient‑care equipment and teaches others. Identifies resource RN for LPN, PCA, and MST staff as needed. Monitors and evaluates nursing care through observation, consultation, and patient rounds. Assesses unit/environmental safety during rounds and reports/corrects deficiencies. Maintains awareness of Joint Commission standards, state codes, and practice acts; monitors documentation and compliance. Provides excellent customer‑service skills and responds to patient/family concerns. Reports significant events to supervisors and activates the chain of command per policy. Provides input into performance appraisal of clinical staff and communicates concerns to managers. Ensures adequate coverage for breaks and manages shift staffing to meet needs. Maintains fiscal responsibility in staffing and uses sound clinical judgment for future shift planning. Accepts personal responsibility for maintaining competencies in direct patient care and team leadership. Collaborates with bed placement and the clinical resource to expedite placement. Unit‑Specific Requirements (if assigned to a specific unit) Emergency Department: ACLS & PALS within 3 months; NIHSS certification within 3 months; TNCC within 12 months; ENPC certification within 12 months; one year of ED experience or completion of ED residency preferred. Post‑Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU): ACLS & PALS within 3 months; preferred ED, PACU, ICU or 2 years med/surg experience with cardiac telemetry. Endoscopy: ACLS within 3 months; preferred 6 months of endoscopy experience or 1 year med/surg experience. Perioperative Resource Team: ACLS & PALS within 3 months; completion of PRT orientation within 12 months. Admit & Discharge: ACLS & PALS within 3 months; one year experience as RN or perianesthesia experience. Main OR/Perioperative: OR nurse residency or at least 1 year OR experience. Critical Care: ACLS within 3 months; NIHSS certification within 3 months; minimum one year in critical or emergency care required. Labor & Delivery: NRP and ACLS within 3 months; intermediate or advanced fetal monitoring certification; 6 months labor and delivery experience or residency. Mother Baby: NRP within 3 months; 6 months mother‑baby experience or residency. Medical–Surgical: 3 months med/surg experience or residency; ECG interpretation course within 3 months; 1 year med/surg experience. Neonatal Intensive Care: NRP within 3 months; 6 months Level II NICU experience or NICU residency. Radiology: ACLS within 3 months; one year radiology experience. Clinical Administrative Resource (CAR): ACLS & PALS within 3 months; NIHSS certification within 3 months; minimum one year of critical care, PACU, or emergency services. STAT RN: ACLS & PALS within 3 months; minimum one to two years in critical care or emergency services. Maternal‑Child Float Pool: NRP within 3 months; minimum 1 year mother‑baby or Level II NICU experience; competency in Level‑II NICU or CPAP within 6 months. Electrophysiology: Two years EP lab experience; registered cardiac electrophysiology specialist or training within 12 months.
