Fleet Mechanic I

The Fleet Mechanic I performs journey-level maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of gasoline, diesel, and electric-powered light vehicles, trucks, equipment, and machinery. This is the second level in the City's fleet career ladder and requires independent judgment in diagnosing mechanical problems and performing skilled repairs across a broad range of light fleet equipment. Work is performed in both shop and field settings under general supervision.

Examples of Duties

Diagnostics & Repair

• Diagnose and repair all major operating systems of light fleet vehicles and equipment, including engines, suspension, power train, electrical, air conditioning, hydraulics, brakes, and tires.
• Disassemble equipment, determine the extent of repairs required, compile parts and materials lists, and reassemble and test repaired equipment.
• Rebuilding engines, hydraulic pumps, and electrical components.
• Overhaul automatic and manual transmissions, small engines, and associated equipment.
• Rebuilds suspension and drive systems.
• Repair and maintain a variety of light equipment, including tractors, ride-on mowers, walk-behind mowers, weed whips, edgers, blowers, chainsaws, and related small-engine equipment.

Welding & Fabrication

• Fabricate and repair equipment using a variety of cutting and welding equipment.

Tires

• Change and repair light and heavy-duty tires; rotate, replace, and repair as required.

Inspections & Preventive Maintenance

• Performs safety inspections and preventive maintenance on light vehicles, trucks, equipment, and machinery.
• Assist with DOT inspections as required.

Field & Facility Repairs

• Repair equipment in the field using service vehicles and portable tools.
• Maintain and repair shop and facility equipment as needed.

Records & Parts

• Keep accurate daily records of equipment repairs, maintenance performed, parts used, oil and filter changes, and other pertinent data.
• Ship and receive parts orders; maintain inventory levels.

Customer Service & Teamwork

• Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public using principles of good customer service.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience

• High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
• Three (3) years of trade experience in a fleet maintenance or light equipment maintenance setting required. Completion of an accredited trade school program or ASE certifications may be substituted for one (1) year of the required experience.

Licenses & Certifications

• Valid California Class C driver's license required at time of appointment; must be maintained throughout employment. Must possess the ability to obtain a California Class A driver's license within twelve (12) months of appointment; must maintain throughout employment.
• ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certification preferred; possession of A-series or T-series ASE certifications is highly desirable.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Methods, materials, safety standards, and techniques used in the repair and maintenance of a variety of gasoline and diesel-powered equipment.
• Care and operation of internal combustion and diesel-powered equipment.
• Maintenance and repair of small and 2-cylinder engines.
• Ability to utilize standard tools and equipment in the repair and maintenance of gasoline and diesel-powered engines and automotive equipment.
• Ability to diagnose engine, electrical, and hydraulic equipment problems using diagnostic test equipment.
• Ability to follow City safety procedures; keep records and provide a written report on work performed.
• Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; respond courteously and tactfully to public inquiries.
• Proficiency in specialized fleet management software; basic proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook; ability to use standard office equipment.
