Job Summary As a member of a multidisciplinary health care team, medical social workers provide psychosocial interventions to patients and their families across any department of the LPCHS. Work typically addresses a variety of biopsychosocial issues and includes assessment of social needs related to the patient’s health status and the collaborative development of a treatment plan, including advocacy within the organization and the community, counseling, referrals and practical assistance to achieve desired outcomes. It also provides consultation, orientation, and training to health care staff on the effects of biopsychosocial, cultural, and economic issues on patient/client management, and advocates for social work core values and ethics within Stanford Medicine and the broader community. Licensed Clinical Social Worker Licensed Clinical Social Worker is the second, fully-qualified level of professional social work for employees who are licensed by the State of California as Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW). Positions at this level are characterized by substantial professional responsibility and independence of action for providing social work services. Social Work Clinician Social Work Clinician is the entry, developmental, and first working level of professional social work for employees who are recent graduates or have professional social work experience but are not yet licensed as LCSW. Essential Functions Licensed Clinical Social Worker Provide individual/group clinical supervision to MSWs and student interns as assigned. Prepare and maintain electronic medical records in accordance with department and/or health system policies. Provide written and oral reports and hand‑offs. Conduct psychosocial assessment of patients/families upon admission, annually, and/or as clinically indicated to evaluate social, emotional, and physical needs by applying social work theories and techniques, and identify and address barriers to care. Collaborate with interdisciplinary health care teams to devise, develop, and implement patient/family psychosocial treatment plans, coordinate referrals to specialty and social services, including entitlement programs, and record progress notes and continuity of care. Help patients/families cope with environmental and psychological issues of illness. Manage an independently assigned caseload of varying clinical acuity. Engage in case finding for patients/families with potential psychosocial needs, attend team conferences, and participate in interdisciplinary rounds as needed. Provide supportive counseling, grief counseling, crisis intervention, and other therapeutic services to assist patients and families in coping with illness, processing medical information, and changes in functioning and care needs. Provide psychoeducation to patients and families regarding adaptation to the patient’s diagnosis, illness, treatment, and/or prognosis; assist transition from youth to adult services. Participate in quality assurance and community improvement related to social work services, and contribute to the review and development of written policies, procedures, or guidelines. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications Education is a master’s degree in Social Work from a CSWE‑accredited program or equivalent via licensure. Experience: two (2) years of progressively responsible, directly related work experience. License/Certification: valid Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) issued by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. Social Work Clinician Qualifications Education: Master’s degree in Social Work (MSW) from a CSWE‑accredited program. If not from an accredited program, must have a certificate from the California Board of Behavioral Sciences verifying registration as an Associate Clinical Social Worker. Successful completion of the Master’s program prior to start date. Utilize hospital and medical center resources to provide patient care and advocate for necessary services. Understand child development and the impact of injury and illness. Understand family dynamics and the impact of injury, illness, and loss. Show sensitivity to cultural considerations of LPCH’s patient population. Additional Information Positions may be flexibly staffed from Social Work Clinician to Licensed Clinical Social Worker. A Social Work Clinician may be promoted when they meet the minimum qualifications and are recommended for promotion by management. If a social work clinician is assigned to a California Children’s Services (CCS) clinic, they must meet CCS Paneling criteria as follows: Social Worker (EPSDT Only) must: Be licensed as a clinical social worker by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences; or Have a master’s degree in social work from a CSWE‑accredited school and five years of full‑time experience providing services to children with CCS‑eligible medical conditions and their families. Individuals with less than five years of experience must submit: A certificate verifying registration as an Associate Clinical Social Worker; and A letter from their employer, signed by a supervisor or social work department director, stating: Weekly supervision if less than two years post‑master’s experience; and Monthly supervision if at least two years but less than five years of experience. Pay Range Compensation is based on the level and requirements of the role. Salary within our ranges may also be determined by education, experience, knowledge, skills, location, and other factors as required. Typically, new team members join at the minimum to mid salary range.
