Bargaining Unit: Local 1230 – Fire Suppression & Prevention Contra Costa County Fire Protection District is recruiting to fill Fire Inspector I positions in the Fire Prevention Bureau. About the District Contra Costa County Fire Protection District is a full-service, all-hazards district that operates with a highly trained team of more than 670 firefighters and professional staff, responding from 37 strategically placed fire stations across 582 square miles. Our operational strength includes a diverse fleet of fire engines, ladder trucks, rescues, boats, dozers, and specialized hazardous materials units. We are further supported by elite teams, including FEMA Urban Search & Rescue, Cal OES hazardous materials response, a Type 2IA hand crew, and a paramedic on every response unit. Behind every response is the vital work of our Regional Fire and EMS Communications Center, robust training and wellness programs, and the committed professionals in fleet services, administration, and prevention. Our proactive Fire Prevention Bureau plays a key role in investigations, public education, plan review, and code enforcement—ensuring safety before the emergency ever begins. About the Fire Prevention Bureau The Fire Prevention Bureau provides the highest level of fire prevention services through comprehensive inspections and code enforcement, plan review and engineering services, public education, fire investigations, and community risk reduction to ensure properties are properly constructed and maintained in accordance with local and state codes. The Fire Prevention Bureau provides fire prevention services to more than one million residents in 19 cities and several defined unincorporated areas across our 716.9 square‑mile jurisdiction. Under the direction of the Fire Marshal, the Fire Prevention Bureau has six main units: Code Enforcement, Engineering, Fire Investigation, Community Risk Reduction, Training, and Clerical. Key Responsibilities Reviewing building plans, site plans, and fire protection system plans for compliance with fire safety standards. Conducting field inspections of projects under construction for compliance with approved plans and specifications. Enforcing fire ordinances and regulations. Minimum Qualifications License Required: Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License. An out‑of‑state valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license will be accepted during the application process. Education Possession of a high school diploma, G.E.D. equivalency or high school proficiency certificate, and 30 semester or 45 quarter accredited college units in fire science, engineering, architecture, construction technology, building inspection, fire prevention or closely related field. Certificates and Training Required Within 12 months of employment, must obtain International Code Council Certification as a Fire Inspector I, and must successfully complete a California Peace Officers’ Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Certified Penal Code 832, Module A course. Within 12 months of employment, appointees must successfully complete the following California Fire Service Training and Education courses: Fire Inspector 1A, 1B, 1C and 1D. On‑going maintenance of certification(s) is required. Experience Two (2) years of full‑time or its equivalent experience in a position requiring the ability to read plans, interpreting designs of non‑structural fire safety elements and fire protection systems in new and remodeled buildings, or application of applicable building and fire codes, laws, regulations and related standards which would provide the knowledge and abilities listed below. Substitution for Education One (1) additional year of qualifying experience as noted above may be substituted for the required education. Substitution for Experience An associate’s or higher degree from an accredited college in fire science, engineering, architecture, construction technology, building inspection, fire prevention, or closely related field may be substituted for the required experience. Other Requirements Citizenship: Must be a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship. Physical Requirements: Ability to meet such health standards as is established by the County Medical Consultant. Selection Process Application Filing and Evaluation: Applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire at the time of application; applications will be evaluated to determine which candidates will move forward in the next phase of the recruitment process. Multiple Choice Assessment: Candidates who possess the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in a multiple-choice assessment. The multiple-choice assessment will be conducted to measure candidates’ competencies as they relate to the job (Weighted 40%). Structured Interview (exam): Candidates who possess the minimum qualifications and pass the written exam will be invited to participate in a structured interview examination. In the structured interview, candidates must achieve an overall average passing score of at least 70%. The interview will measure candidates’ competencies as they relate to the Fire Inspector I classification (Weighted 60%). Candidates are not permitted to retake the same written exam within a one-year period. If you apply for another recruitment that uses this written exam and the test is scheduled within one year of the date you took the test this time, you will not have the option to re‑take the exam. If more than one year has passed, but less than three years has passed, you may choose to either re‑use your score or retake the exam. If you elect to retake the exam, your most recent score will be used, regardless of whether it is higher or lower than the previous score. Meeting the minimum qualifications does not guarantee an invitation to participate in the selection process. Conviction History After you receive a conditional job offer, you will be fingerprinted, and your fingerprints will be sent to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The resulting report of your conviction history (if any) will be used to determine whether the nature of your conviction conflicts with the specific duties and responsibilities of the job for which you have received a conditional job offer. If a conflict exists, you will be asked to present any evidence of rehabilitation that may mitigate the conflict, except when federal or state regulations bar employment in specific circumstances. Having a conviction history does not automatically preclude you from a job with Contra Costa County. If you accept a conditional job offer, the Human Resources department will contact you to schedule a fingerprinting appointment. Disaster Service Worker All Contra Costa County employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law. Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
