Job Summary Under the administrative direction of the Chair of the Department of Pathology, this role assumes professional, scientific, consultative, administrative and educational responsibilities as needed in sections for the Division of Anatomic Pathology. Typical Duties The Attending Physician VIII (Pathologist) is expected to participate actively in the delivery of quality patient care and service by each section in the Division of Anatomic Pathology. In the Section of Surgical Pathology, the physician performs the microscopic evaluation and sign‑out of all general surgical pathology cases assigned on the frozen section call (cytology, hematology, neuropathology, and dermatopathology cases are assigned for sub‑specialty sign‑out). The physician works independently within a collegial environment. In‑departmental consultations and daily consensus conferences are available for challenging cases. Send‑out services are available as needed. The physician participates in the Surgical Pathology rotation schedule, including rotating nights and weekends frozen‑section coverage. Holidays are divided equally between attendings. The physician provides clinical guidance and teaches pathologist extenders, residents, and fellows as needed. The physician supports and participates in scholarly activities and clinical research within the Division of Anatomic Pathology and the Department of Pathology. The physician performs other duties as assigned in the Division of Anatomic Pathology, in accordance with nationally accepted standards in the field of Anatomic Pathology. The physician also performs duties as assigned by the Section Director of Surgical Pathology or the Chair of the Division of Anatomic Pathology. In the Sections of Cytology and Hematopathology: Attendings with a Cytology Fellowship and/or Cytology subspecialty Board Certification may rotate on Cytopathology service sign‑out for one (1) week at a time. Duties include signing out all cytology cases (gynecologic and non‑gynecologic) assigned to the service. Attendings with a Hematopathology Fellowship who are Board‑eligible/Board‑certified in Hematopathology will rotate in Hematopathology sign‑out service for one (1) week at a time. Duties include evaluation and sign‑out of all bone marrow biopsies, lymph node excisions, and flow cytometry cases assigned. The physician evaluates peripheral smears and body fluid cases flagged for pathologist review on a daily basis. In the Section of Autopsy Pathology: As needed, the physician performs the postmortem examination on all assigned cases, works alone or teaches and provides clinical guidance to residents/fellows and other assigned health professionals, including students, during dissection, gross description, documentation, selection of sections, microscopic examination, and clinical pathologic correlation of autopsy findings. As needed, the physician is responsible for issuing timely provisional and final anatomic diagnoses of assigned cases. The physician performs other duties as assigned by the Section Director of Autopsy Pathology and the Chair of the Division of Anatomic Pathology. Minimum Qualifications Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical college or university or foreign equivalent. Valid license as a Physician in the State of Illinois. Completed residency training in Anatomic Pathology or Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. Board Certification or Board Eligibility in Anatomic Pathology, or Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, and must achieve Board Certification within one (1) year of starting employment. Degrees awarded outside the United States (except in U.S. territories and Canada) must be credentialed by an approved U.S. credential evaluation service belonging to the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) or the Association of International Credential Evaluators (AICE). Original credentialing documents must be presented at the interview. Must successfully meet the credentialing standards established by the Cook County Health and Hospitals System, including a State of Illinois MD license and any other required licenses, certifications, or specialized training within two (2) weeks prior to the candidate’s start date. Preferred Qualifications Surgical Pathology Fellowship with subspecialty training, expertise or interest, especially in breast pathology, dermatopathology, soft tissue and bone pathology, informatics, or histology laboratory expertise. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including meticulous and legible medical documentation necessary to communicate with all levels of staff and a patient population composed of diverse cultures and age groups. Effective interpersonal communication skills. Strong diagnostic skills in the fields of Autopsy and Surgical Pathology. Strong personal and communication skills, and a firm commitment to providing excellent patient care. Physical and Environmental Demands This position is functioning within a healthcare environment. The incumbent is responsible for adhering to all hospital and department‑specific safety requirements, including compliance with personal protective equipment, hand washing and sanitizing practices, and any other work‑area safety precautions specified by hospital‐wide policy and departmental procedures. Veteran Preference Preference is given to honorably discharged Veterans who have served in the Armed Forces of the United States for not less than 6 months of continuous service. To take advantage of this preference, a Veteran must meet the minimum qualifications for the position, identify themselves as a Veteran on the application, and attach a copy of DD‑214, DD‑215, or NGB 22, or a valid state ID card or driver’s license identifying the holder as a Veteran. Discharge papers must list an honorable discharge status. Veterans must provide original applicable discharge papers or state ID card or driver’s license at the time of interview.
