Description: The Registered Nurse implements professional nursing practice centered on the patient as a whole person. The focus is on creating a caring environment centered on healing and wellness. Nursing practices are based on evidence, current research, hospital policies, regulatory standards, and professional guidelines. Clinical decision-making incorporates all four phases of the nursing process, clinical thinking, and creativity. Nursing excellence is promoted through helping relationships among nursing staff and across other disciplines. Responsibilities include coordinating, ensuring, and providing direct patient care activities. This encompasses provision of nursing rounds, assessments, treatments, and patient education. Engagement in individualized treatment planning is also important. The RN performs and documents comprehensive assessments according to their scope of practice. Consideration of the patient's culture, age, and developmental level is essential. Identifying patient risk factors and presenting complaints is a key responsibility. The RN collects objective and subjective data to inform patient care. Development of a problem list and prioritizing patient needs is conducted with the inter-professional team. Actions and interventions are designed relevant to the patient's culture and age. Determining desired outcomes in coordination with the patient and family is necessary. Full implementation of patient care therapies and procedures is expected. Explaining procedures, treatments, and processes to patients and families is required. Initiating actions to alleviate patient stress and discomfort is a crucial aspect of the role. Recognition and communication of changes in patient condition are imperative. Ongoing assessments and responses to procedures are conducted according to established standards. The RN delegates tasks appropriately and oversees team members' performance of patient care. Monitoring the accuracy and completeness of delegated patient care is required. Identifying and addressing educational needs of patients is part of the responsibilities. Facilitating the patient discharge process is important to ensure timely execution of discharge orders. The RN provides input into nurse assignments considering staffing and patient acuity. Active participation in unit-based activities to support organizational values is essential. Promoting a positive group dynamic and healing environment through words and actions is necessary. Assurance of nursing excellence according to accepted standards and evidence-based practice is expected. Participation in quality improvement activities is critical in areas such as patient satisfaction and safety. A holistic perspective regarding patient care is fundamental.
