PREP Research Associate Salary : $70,000 - $85,000 Johns Hopkins University: Whiting School of Engineering: Office of Research and Translation This position is part of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Professional Research Experience (PREP) program. It involves collaborating with a university partner on scientific research projects that require research staff to work on technical work underpinning the collaboration. Research Title Developing a standard reference phase change material in support of the thermal insulation industry Key Responsibilities Simulate thermal distributions on empty and PCM‑filled encapsulation panels between heating and cooling sources. Determine thermal conductivity and heat capacity values of PCM encapsulation panels using computational methods. Analyze PCM melting and solidification processes in the encapsulations using computational methods. Present results at internal meetings and occasional meetings with external stakeholders. Ensure that results, protocols, software, and documentation are archived. Qualifications A minimum master’s degree in computer science, engineering, manufacturing, or a related field. A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience is preferred. Familiarity with PCM and thermal simulations is a big plus. Ability to work with commercial finite element software (experience with COMSOL is preferred but not required). Ability to develop an analytical model needed to analyze data.
