Clinical Chair of Surgery (CUSOM)

Position: Clinical Chair of Surgery (CUSOM) Department: Jerry M. Wallace School of Osteopathic Medicine Status: Part Time Position Summary The Chair of Surgery is a member of the Clinical Faculty for Campbell University Jerry M. Wallace School of Osteopathic Medicine (CUSOM). The Chair of Surgery is responsible for the Surgery program development, including participation in designing the Surgery curriculum, as well as assisting the Vice Dean for Academic Affairs and Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs with development of the pre-clinical and clinical curriculum.This role includes faculty recruitment and faculty development to ensure successful delivery of the curriculum and clinical experiences across all four years of the program.Other responsibilities include the supervision of the school’s Surgery faculty and students and contribution to the advancement of students’ professionalism, knowledge, skills, and competencies to the level required for a graduate Osteopathic physician. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Demonstrates an active and consistent commitment to the Mission of CUSOM. Provides instruction in the Clinical Skills course, including Simulation activities, and during Friday morning clinical cases and Friday afternoon open labs and Callback Fridays. Serves as a faculty Course Director as needed during Blocks 1-8 of years one and two. Assists in the grading of student OSCE cases through all four years of the curriculum. Provides instruction in clinical skills, simulation, and other topics as needed during Simulation Month. Serves as the liaison between the students, clinical faculty, and the Associate Deans. Recruits faculty/staff as needed to ensure successful delivery of the specialty curriculum. Provides input for the annual budget for the Biomedical and Clinical Education Department in collaboration with Department Chairs, Course Directors, Assistant Deans, DME’s or DSME; ensures they support the Mission, vision, and priorities of CUSOM and reviews the outcomes of the programs and budgets on a regular basis. Provides administrative oversight to the specialty faculty during the pre-clinical and clinical years. Develops and coordinates programs and resources to assist and promote faculty growth, development, and accomplishments in the fields of the specialty’s education, research, professional, and clinical service. Assures integration of osteopathic principles across all four years of the curriculum. Serves as a consultant committed to monitoring, evaluating, developing, and implementing educational, administrative, and research programs to meet established faculty and departmental requirements. Provides information relevant to the appointment process for all specialty-specific faculty members. Works in cooperation with the Curriculum Committee, Course Directors, and System Co-Coordinators to develop syllabi and curriculum for the students of the COM, schedule courses, assign educators, evaluate outcomes, and implement a continuous quality assessment and improvement system for the curriculum of the COM. Facilitates annual evaluation of each faculty member of the specialty division. Participates in the requisite number of faculty interviews of CUSOM applicants. Participates in faculty meetings and committees as assigned. Assures the advancement and integration of high standards for ethical and professional behavior in all aspects of the education of the students of CUSOM and actions of the administration, faculty, and staff. Establishes and oversees Surgery core rotations with signed affiliation agreements to accommodate all third-year students. Develops a specialty-specific curriculum for the third-year core rotation. Regularly visits core clerkship/rotation sites to ensure adequate delivery of the clinical curriculum.Meets with students and clinical faculty during these visits to gather feedback regarding the clinical rotation experience. Reviews results of end-of-rotation exams, preceptor evaluation of students, and student evaluations of preceptors.Assembles summary information and provides appropriate follow-up, feedback, and education and training to students, clinical faculty, DSMEs, Regional Deans, and the CUSOM Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs. Collaborates with and assists the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and others as necessary with the CUSOM Graduate Medical Education program development efforts. Counsels students regarding career choices and strategies to ensure a successful Match. Maintains a professional appearance and demeanor at all times. Upholds and abides by all Campbell University policies and procedures, including, but not limited to, Title IX and FERPA guidelines. Education/Experience An earned D.O. or M.D. degree from an accredited COCA or LCME medical school. A valid medical license and ability to obtain North Carolina licensure. Appropriate board-eligible status or board certification in General Surgery or a Surgery Subspecialty. Preferred three years of successful academic experience in a medical school and/or higher education. Preferred track record in teaching and leadership from an accredited medical school. Be a member in good standing in all appropriate professional and governmental organizations. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to communicate effectively to all groups through both oral and written channels. Ability to work as a group leader and group member, strong team player. Ability to prepare program and grant proposals and academic evaluative reports. Ability to respond calmly and appropriately in emotional situations.Ability to listen and communicate in a positive manner. Must be proficient in word processing and computer usage experience. Experience and demonstrated abilities for working in an academic setting. Ability to collaborate and interact with health care professionals. Ability to organize, direct, prioritize, and delegate work appropriately. Ability to manage time well and work under stressful conditions with an even temperament. Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with other employees and the public. Excellent organizational and management skills. Ability to interact with and develop strong relationships with a variety of people, groups, and institutions. Ability to maintain a positive and fresh approach and attitude. Ability to manage multiple, cross discipline, projects to meet required deadlines. Demonstrate an active and consistent commitment to CUSOM and Campbell University Mission and values. Possess excellent verbal and communication skills with the ability to speak comfortably before large groups. Demonstrate ability to complete multiple assignments, meet deadlines, and exercise good judgment. Excellent analytical skills necessary for preparing financial, legal, and administrative tasks. Complexity of Duties Complexity of duties will be commensurate with level of experience.This individual will have direct interaction with medical students and academic faculty which may require advanced critical thinking and analytical skills. Types of Contacts This individual reports directly to, the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs. This individual will interact with faculty, staff, and administrative personnel of the University, clinical faculty and staff at clinical clerkship sites, and student applicants from various universities throughout the U.S. Other Information This position demands honesty, integrity and the ability to work with the Christian mission of Campbell University. Requires attendance at events within as well as outside of the University setting. Travel to regional clinical sites required. This is a 0.4-0.5 FTE position consisting of academic and administrative roles. There is an opportunity to structure this position as a full-time, 1.0FTE position, with 50-60% clinical responsibilities and 40-50% academic and administrative responsibilities.
