Mission:
The Booker T. Washington Community Service Centers mission is to empower the lives of our community by offering individuals and families the services and support they need to become self-sufficient. The oldest Black-led, Black-serving organization in San Francisco, BTWCSC has been a beacon of support and light for the Fillmore/Western Addition community for more than a century. Serving over 3,500 people a year, we work to reduce economic and racial disparities by serving as a one-stop hub that provides affordable housing, education, senior services, family stabilization, workforce development, and community building. BTWCSC is an anchor institution and is one of the few urban spaces where anyone in the community can access comprehensive services, from a hot meal to childcare to academic support to senior services. The Center is located at 800 Presidio Ave in San Francisco, CA.
Position Summary:
BTWCSC seeks an operationally-driven Food to Freedom Engagement Coordinator to support our communitys right to healthy, culturally appropriate, food produced sustainably. They will work under the direct supervision of the Food to Freedom Engagement & Education Manager to execute the maintenance and expansion of our internal and external community food procurement and distribution programs, with a focus on the success of our community grocery and meal programs. They will ensure the safe distribution of high-quality, nutritious food and apply best practices in food safety, health, and nutrition and a participant-centered approach. They will be responsible for the timely and accurate collection, reporting, and filing of all program data both client-focused and operations-focused such as outreach, applications, intakes service logs, and program evaluations for quality.
Essential Duties: (Other duties may be assigned.)
Service & Food Supply Operations Support:
- Support in the daily operations of all food programs and events with a specific focus on ensuring successful service delivery at all community grocery and meal sites.
- Follow and implement all SOPs and policies regarding inventory management, ordering, distribution, volunteer coordination, and food safety.
- Provide consistent communication and feedback on actionable improvements and changes to the operational and administrative systems of the Food to Freedom Program.
- Leverage strong customer service experience skills to manage client needs, complaints or issues expediently, provide follow-up staff training, and implement needed system/process improvements.
- Maintain all processes regarding distribution in accordance with health and safety regulations. Prioritize zero-waste practices.
- Support the Food Operations Team in all operational needs for the BTWCSC signature holidays, events and additional food programs such as November and December holidays, Black History Month, Juneteenth etc.
- Provide excellent customer service and hospitality practices, resolving participant concerns quickly and professionally.
- As directed, provide cross-trained support for the Food Operations team including, but not limited to tasks regarding food supply, distribution, storage, disposal, and facility maintenance.
Reporting & Continuous Improvement:
- Collect, record, and maintain all client-based and site-based service touchpoint data into both internal and external database systems (paper and digital formats) in an organized, accurate, and timely manner. Responsible for all client and participant enrollments, service touchpoints, and disenrollment.
- Track and provide actionable insights into the Food to Freedom program and community trends based on verifiable quantitative and qualitative information gathered before, during, and after service operations.
- Implement evaluation activities approved by the Food Operations Manager and Food Engagement & Education Manager which measure the impact of food distribution on family stability, health, and food security.
- Coordinate and collaborate with the Food Operations Manager, Food Engagement & Education Manager and Data Operations team members to ensure accurate and timely data collection and reporting workflows.
- Contribute to identifying and implementing actionable systems solutions through operation protocols or tools related to equitable food access.
Program & Community Outreach:
- Support the launch and continued service of new community grocery and meal sites under the guidance of the Food Engagement & Education Manager.
- Support and collaborate with the Food Engagement & Education Manager on the targeted outreach of prospective clients/participants in both internal and external programming at all existing sites.
- Implement and execute all administrative and communication tasks for client intakes, participant applications, eligibility assessments, program acceptance and on-boarding.
- Support and facilitate food justice education opportunities to staff and client/participant community under the direction of the Food Engagement & Education Manager.
- Under the guidance from the Food Engagement and Education Manager, coordinate with program teams and partners on community education opportunities, including but not limited to: farm visits and tours, healthy grocery store tours, community dinners, and Family Harvest/U-Pick Days, lesson plans and reading material etc.
- Assist the Food Engagement & Education Manager in developing and integrating educational materialssuch as recipe cards, nutrition education signage,inserts, labeling, fact sheets, and cookbooksinto existing food distribution programs, including the Friday Markets, CSAs, meal distribution and delivery, and off-site grocery distribution.
Job Qualifications:
- 3+ years of experience in food, agricultural production, restaurant, grocery retail or hospitality experience in a fast-paced setting, preferably in an operations position.
- At least 2 years of direct experience in food justice and system work via teaching, organizing, garden education, and/or other educational activities.
- HS diploma or equivalent is required.
- Experience in direct service and/or client management is preferred.
- Reliable, punctual, adaptable, and able to create an independent work plan with guidance and feedback from the supervisor.
- Demonstrated ability to complete administrative work including, but not limited to, data entry and client communication tasks in a timely, accurate, and organized manner.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the food and nutrition, inequities, social and cultural needs of
underserved communities and the historical and contemporary impacts of racism and structural
inequities.
- Demonstrated experience with the outreach and engagement of diverse populations with racially and culturally-responsive services and programs, highly preferred.
- Lived experience with Black/African-American communities and/or communities of color and/or navigating housing insecurity and/or the justice system preferred.
- Strong ability to communicate effectively and professionally with staff, clients, volunteers, and community members.
- Demonstrates professionalism, socioemotional intelligence, and integrity.
- Excellent verbal, writing, and comprehension skills.
- Google Suite, MS Excel proficiency required with a strong preference for candidates with experience in managing and/or implementing inventory management systems
Education:
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- HS Diploma or General Equivalent Diploma.
- Experience working with food programs is highly desired.
- Experience working with a variety of age groups (youth to senior) is highly desired.
Certification, Licensure, Training:
Applicants must complete all requirements of this job such as a ServSafe Certification.
Knowledge/Experience:
Must have the ability to demonstrate and/or show competency in the following areas:

- To meet program goals as outlined in the BTWCSC Policies and Procedures Manual.
- To keep confidences, loyalties and practice professionalism.
- Be reliable and dependable.
- If 21 years old, able to drive safely and within the required posted speed limit, have a valid license, current insurance, and a clean driving record; able to pass a defensive driving course.
- Must pass CPR/AED/1st Aid certification by an approved provider within 3 months from original date of hire and maintain while employed.
- Work a flexible schedule to meet Center needs.
- Exercise mature judgment and sound decision making.
- Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Learn, follow and enforce BTWCSC guidelines related to internal policies

Physical Requirements:
Must be able to move 50 pounds safely. Must be able to effectively review documents. Must be able to adequately communicate to respond to members and interact with the public. Must be able to remain in a stationary position during shift. Physical requirements are also typical of those needed in an office environment.
Schedule:
Regular business hours, Monday Friday, 9am to 6pm. Occasional night or weekend hours as needed. Additional hours required for program activities include, but are not limited to, BTW events, evening and late-night duty, field trips, and/or staff meetings; a calendar will be provided in advance.
