Job DetailJob Title:Emergency Department Admissions SpecialistDepartment:62042-Patient AccessLocation:FarmingtonFTE%:1Shift2Search #:2027-192Closing Date:09/02/2026Recruiter:McNamara, Elizabeth Additional Links:This position is Benefit eligible; click here for an overview of available benefits.This position is covered by the UHP Bargaining Unit; click here to review the current UHP Contract.This position is in salary group UHP-03; click here to review the current UHP Pay Plan.UConn Health is looking to hire an Emergency Department Admissions Specialist to become a member of the Emergency Department team, this position will be responsible for performing a full range of administrative task, assuring the efficient admission of patients and accuracy of patient status in the appropriate systems.SCHEDULE: This is a full time, 40 hours per week, varied shifts with standard hours of 3:00 p.m to 11:30 p.m., rotating weekends and holidays. 30-minute unpaid meal breakSUPERVISION RECEIVED: General supervision from employees of higher grade.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREDKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITY:Knowledge of medical terminology; knowledge of bookkeeping; computer skills; knowledge of the principles and practices of clinic office management; ability to interpret Medicare, Medicaid, commercial insurance industry regulation; good interpersonal skills, oral and written communications skills; knowledge of the principles and techniques of patient interviewing; knowledge of the relevant hospital/department, insurance and Medicare policies and procedures including billings and credit policies and procedures; ability to schedule and prioritize workflow.EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Three (3) years of experience in an ambulatory care, emergency department or customer service setting and previous experience with insurance requirements.SUBSTITUTION: College training may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equaling one half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of one (1) year.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 1.5 years Emergency Department registration experience1.5 years of EPIC experienceEXAMPLES OF DUTIES:Process inpatient admissions/discharge/transfers for elective, urgent, direct and emergency admissions, and obtains required information.Maintains daily census, statistics, daily admission/discharge/transfer lists and systems error logs in all relevant system.Prepares and distributes daily ADT [admissions/discharges/transfers]. Assigns bed according to established policies, including clinical criteria; maintains accurate patient locations.Performs interviewing work of a specialized nature relating to the pre-admissions, admissions, and discharge of ED records.Inputs and administers charges for services utilizing appropriate guidelines.Counsel patients on insurance coverage and billing procedures. NNotifies appropriate personnel of changes to admission or missing signatures.Contacts the relevant sources (insurance companies, HMOs, the third parties etc.) to obtain insurance verification data and pre-certification approval for admissions. Maintains up-to-date information on various insurance policies. Collects co-pay and valuables, prepares receipts and makes deposits adhering to University and State guidelines. Process ED records and enter billings (codes, diagnosis, verifying information, batching, totals etc.).
