The Nurse Practitioner/Physician's Assistant works collaboratively in the Student Health Center with a multidisciplinary team whose primary responsibility is providing quality health care services for students of Chapman University, in accordance with standards of professional practice and ethical conduct. The Physician Assistant performs diagnostic, therapeutic, preventative and health maintenance services under the direction and supervision of a physician. The Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant maintains accurate and complete medical records, and maintains strict confidentiality of clinical, social, financial or other student data in compliance with university, state and federal guidelines. The Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant maintains accurate and complete medical records, and maintains strict confidentiality of clinical, social, financial or other student data in compliance with university, state and federal guidelines. Responsibilities
- Provide quality health care services for student illness/injury within the scope of physician assistant practice and established Student Health Center policies and procedures:
- Obtain detailed and accurate medical histories from student.
- Perform appropriate physical examinations, formulate diagnosis and treatment plan under physician supervision and record in the patient file.
- Perform and/or interpret laboratory and diagnostic testing.
- Perform procedures such as injections, immunizations, suturing and wound care.
- Provide continuity of care in the management of the student's illness and injury under the supervision of a physician.
- Instruct and counsel student regarding compliance with prescribed therapeutic regimens and health maintenance.
- Provide first aid, evaluations and/or referral of student employee occupational injuries in compliance with University, state and federal guidelines.
- Prescribe medications and other treatment in accordance with the standardized procedures.
- Provide and counsel on medications including correct usage and side effects.
- Maintain accurate records of pharmaceutical use.
- Facilitate referrals to other health and social service agencies when appropriate.
- Promote health and wellness in areas of lifestyle and behavior that enhance physical, psychological and social well-being.
- Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant program.
- Current, unrestricted California Physician Assistant license in good standing issued by the California Physician Assistant Board.
- Successful completion of the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE).
- Graduate degree (Master's, Post-Master's Certificate, or Doctor of Nursing Practice) from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
- Current, unrestricted California Registered Nurse license and California Nurse Practitioner certification in good standing.
- Current DEA registration (or ability to obtain prior to start date).
- Current furnishing/prescribing authority consistent with California law.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification may be required depending on setting.
- Ability to obtain and maintain clinical privileges.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and documentation skills.
- Experience using electronic health records (EHRs).
- Three (3) or more years of experience in college health, primary care, family practice, urgent care, or ambulatory care settings.
- Experience providing healthcare services to adolescents, emerging adults, and young adult populations (typically ages 18-25).
- Experience working in a college or university student health setting.
- Experience practicing within an integrated behavioral health model and collaborating with psychologists, counselors, psychiatrists, and case managers.
- Experience assessing and managing common mental health concerns in young adults, including anxiety, depression, ADHD, substance use, and adjustment-related concerns.
- Experience providing sexual and reproductive healthcare, including STI evaluation and treatment, contraception counseling, and gender-affirming care.
- Experience with health promotion, prevention, and wellness programming for college populations.
- Experience responding to urgent medical and behavioral health situations in an outpatient setting.
- Experience participating in campus-wide initiatives related to student well-being, public health, or prevention.
- Experience with immunization compliance programs, communicable disease management, and outbreak response.
- Experience working with culturally, linguistically, and socioeconomically diverse populations.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive healthcare.
- Experience serving international students, first-generation students, LGBTQ+ students, student-athletes, veterans, and other diverse student populations.
- Bilingual or multilingual proficiency, particularly in Spanish, strongly preferred.
- Experience with electronic health record systems and telehealth service delivery.
- Experience supervising or precepting healthcare trainees, residents, nurse practitioner students, or physician assistant students.
- Knowledge of best practices and standards in college health, including guidelines from the American College Health Association.
