CHIEF ACCOUNTANTThe City of Worcester is seeking applicants for the position of Chief Accountant for the Office of the Treasurer and Collector of Taxes. Under the direction of the Deputy Assistant Treasurer, the position will be responsible for supervising the work of three accounting staff, along with managing assigned tasks. This position requires expert knowledge of accounting, audit and financial analysis to direct and advise accounting staff and examine and reconcile City accounts. The Chief Accountant executes key internal control procedures on a timely basis to assure that City receipts and disbursements are recorded timely, accurately and completely. The Chief Accountant is also responsible for validating that all transactions are processed in accordance with the Treasurer and Collector's policies and procedures and are timely and accurately recorded in the City's books and records.Bilingual applicants are encouraged to apply.Essential Elements:Supervise, manage and lead the work of three staff accountants who are responsible for the review and analysis of City Ledger (Workday), Sub-Ledger (Workday and MUNIS), Billing System (MUNIS) and bank accounts, including proof of daily transactions.Oversee the analysis and resolution of reconciling items through collaboration with the Assistant Treasurer, Assistant Collector, Treasurer and Collector, Auditor, departments and external vendors.Complete Month End reconciliations from staff and own, review and approve monthly, quarterly and yearly reconciliations (Bank, Accounts Receivable, Deferred Revenue, etc.) to the general ledger and sub-ledger in Workday, MUNIS and/or other reporting system including schedules and back up for review by the Assistant Treasurer and Treasurer and Collector.Assist with year-end activities including Accruals, General Ledger Reconciliations, State and Federal Reporting, Bank Reconciliation, closing out of books and audits.Acquire detailed understanding of City financial systems including Workday, HERA, MUNIS, Opengov, etc.Adhere to internal controls to assure that financial transactions are made timely and in accordance with Treasurer and Collector policies and procedures.Adhere to State and Federal regulatory and reporting requirements.Assist with Treasurer and Collector financial tasks as assigned.Other duties as assigned.Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Supervisory experience in general accounting.Prior experience with robust, high transaction volume financial systems and ledgers.Strong analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills with a hands-on approach to resolving issues.Demonstrated computer proficiency including Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel.High accuracy, attention to detail, and the ability to meet deadlines.Effective communication and strong collaborative skills across departments and with the public.Strong collaborative skills to work with employees, Departments, and the public.Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.Regular onsite attendance is required.Minimum Requirements:Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field OR any equivalent combination of education & three (3) years of experience that provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the required duties of the position will be considered in lieu of the above-mentioned requirements.Experience with employee supervisionKnowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and standard audit practicesExperience with Microsoft Excel for financial data analysis and reconciliationExcellent verbal and written communication skillsPreferred Qualifications:Master's degree in accounting, finance, or business administrationCertified Public Accountant, or other accounting related certificationTwo (2) years of experience with Government Accounting Standards Board (GASB) basis of accountingMunicipal experience is preferredTwo (2) years of supervisory experienceExperience with the Workday, MUNIS platformsHiring Range: $102,520 - $111,599 annually, exempt, full-time, with an excellent benefits package.Full Salary Range: $102,520 - $120,636 annuallyTo apply, please visit or send resume and cover letter on or before Friday September 4, 2026, to: City of Worcester, 455 Main Street, Room 109, Worcester, MA 01608.
