Job Summary


Under general supervision, performs landscaping and grounds maintenance work of routine difficulty.

Essential Duties

1. Operates hand and riding mowers to cut grass on University properties.
2. Trims edges around walks, flower beds, walls, trees, and shrubs using clippers, weed cutters, and edging tools.
3. Prunes and trims hedges and trees to shape, improve growth, or remove damaged leaves, branches or twigs, using shears pruners, or chain saw.
4. Removes weeds from around shrubs, trees, and bedding plants.
5. Plants grass, flowers, trees, and shrubs using gardening tools.
6. Waters lawns, trees, shrubs and flowers using hoses or by activating fixed or portable sprinkler systems.
7. Sprays lawn, shrubs and trees with fertilizer, herbicides, and insecticides using hand or automatic sprayer.
8. Cleans grounds and removes litter, leaves, and other debris; removes trash from drainage ditches and culverts, using shovel and rake.
9. Operates backhoe, front end loader, and forklift as needed.
10. Helps maintain and repair water sprinklers.
11. Uses high pressure water sprayer to clean sidewalks, porches, and buildings.
12. Sharpens tools such as weed cutters, edging tools, and shears using file or knife sharpener.
13. May paint fences and outbuildings.
14. Spreads salt on public passageways to prevent ice build-up.
15. Attends training, seminars, and other meetings as needed.
16. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of the principles and practices of lawn and grounds maintenance;
• Knowledge of the operation of a variety of landscaping and grounds maintenance equipment;
• Knowledge of grounds maintenance and minor repair of applicable tools and equipment;
• Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions necessary in general labor and grounds maintenance;
• Knowledge of applicable University policies and procedures;
• Ability to calculate and/or determine weights, measurements, and quantities;
• Ability to perform general labor and grounds maintenance work in a variety of climatic conditions;
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and complete work as assigned;
• Ability to read, understand and utilize operation and maintenance manuals, chemical applicator
• instructions, policies, procedures and other related materials;
• Ability to operate with proficiency the tools and equipment related to landscaping and grounds maintenance;
• Skilled in oral communication.
• Skilled in the operation of grounds maintenance tools and equipment.

Equipment Utilized:
Lawn mowers; hand tools; backhoe; front end loader; forklift; personnel lift; truck; sweeper;
seeding and fertilizing equipment; irrigation systems and related equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school education plus one year of landscaping, grounds maintenance, or closely related experience.
• Must have a valid Texas driver's license and have a driving record acceptable to the University's insurance company.
• Must pass a pre-employment physical.
• Must pass a background check.

Physical Requirements


Position requires frequent walking, standing, pushing/pulling, bending and occasional carrying and lifting (up to 80 lbs.) Basic manual dexterity with both hands is required, and both feet are utilized in the operation of equipment and/or vehicles. Incumbent works in and out of doors and has regular exposure to moving machinery, high noise levels, dust, pollen, heat and cold.
