## Maintenance Worker IApply: Maintenance Center (PW): Full time: Posted Yesterday: JR1623Responsible for performing routine maintenance, repair and construction activities as part of a crew working on infrastructure, buildings and other facilities for the City of Olympia (City). Series Concept: 1. Maintenance Worker I is the entry and training level in the Maintenance Worker series which consists of Maintenance Worker I, Maintenance Worker II, Field Crew Leader, and Lead Maintenance Worker classifications. 2. Maintenance Workers I perform routine labor; basic repair and construction; grounds maintenance and basic landscaping; and general building cleaning. 3. Work is completed by following clear written instructions and/or supervision. 4. The more routine assignments can be accomplished with general supervision from directions. 5. More skilled duties and responsibilities are performed in a training capacity as a member of a crew under the close supervision of a more experienced employee.# **Essential Functions****The essential functions of this position include but are not limited to:** 1. Assists with maintenance and repair activities for assigned City facilities. 2. Inspects building, grounds, and equipment; performs necessary repairs and maintenance. 3. Assists in installing equipment and appliances. 4. Performs basic pruning, fertilizing and transplanting of landscaping; removes brush and litter. 5. Assists with street repairs and winter sanding operations; shovels various materials. 6. Drives pickup and dump trucks; operates roller, paving machines, backhoe and street sweepers. 7. Assists with installing street signs and markings; repairs guard rails, curbs and sidewalks as required. 8. Ensures compliance with City and state building codes. 9. Maintains accurate records of all repairs and maintenance activities per system maintained and repaired. 10. Disposes of hazardous material in compliance with City, state, and federal safety regulations. 11. Follows City and public safety guidelines and protocols and performs job functions in a safe manner; reports all safety hazards per established policies and procedures. 12. Responds to inquiries, questions and comments from the public per established standards and protocols. 13. Punctual, regular and reliable attendance is essential for successful job performance.**DRINKING WATER** 1. Sets new meters, programs electronic modules with correct reading mode, installs antenna, and provides proper route and sequence information. 2. Investigates leak complaints for customers in the field by visual and electronic means; interprets data and reports findings to customers and billing specialists. 3. Cuts brush, raises meter boxes, and replaces broken lids, boxes and antennas. 4. Raises meter services when applicable.**FACILITIES** 1. Prepares meeting rooms for occupancy, including all room arrangements such as setting up and taking down collapsible tables, stacking and unstacking chairs, placing tables and chairs, connecting audio/video equipment, and preparing and delivering refreshment carts. 2. Assists in the emergency evacuation of the building, including physical removal of people unable to assist themselves from the building if necessary. 3. May perform custodial duties to include vacuuming, shampooing and spot cleaning carpets; stripping and waxing of floors; cleaning and sanitizing restrooms and kitchens; and cleaning windows, blinds and vents. 4. May complete minor plumbing repairs, patching and painting, and cleaning roofs, gutters, downspouts, and flower beds. 5. May be assigned to move or assist in moving furniture. 6. May remove snow around City owned buildings 7. May perform painting, wall repair, and general maintenance activities as necessary.**OLYMPIA CENTER** 1. Prepares rooms per customer requests. 2. Sets up audio visual equipment per customer request; troubleshoots customer connectivity issues. 3. Records moorage and opens moorage deposit box. 4. Cleans kitchen floors and mats; empties trash and keeps public areas clean.**PARKS, ARTS, AND RECREATION** 1. Provides access, cleaning, garbage collection and basic facility maintenance for City parks. 2. Maintains bathrooms and shelters including cleaning, stocking, and basic repair. 3. Collects garbage; empties cans using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). 4. Manages park shelter reservations; tracks and posts reservations.**STORMWATER AND WASTEWATER COLLECTIONS** 1. Repairs and cleans storm and sewer infrastructure. 2. Cleans and checks valves; monitors pumps for proper operation. 3. Assists with digging ditches and laying sewer, water, and stormwater pipe.**TRANSPORTATION** 1. Pressure washes sidewalks. 2. Removes graffiti. 3. May drive trucks and trailers.**WASTE RESOURCES** 1. Delivers and picks up refuse/recycle carts and containers. 2. Repairs and maintains refuse/recycle carts and containers. 3. Responds to customer requests for special pick-ups. 4. Washes and breaks down carts to prepare for recycling facility. 5. Washes and re-paints containers and roll offs. 6. Will require the ability to lift heavy objects, up to 70 pounds.# **Typical Qualifications****Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:** 1. Knowledge of basic building, landscaping or building maintenance techniques. 2. Knowledge of basic safety procedures and precautions. 3. Skill in operating and maintaining small manual and power tools and equipment. 4. Ability to learn to use Microsoft Office products (Word, Outlook and Excel) and applicable department / organization specific software. 5. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. 6. Ability to work as a member of a crew. 7. Ability to work with limited supervision. 8. Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely. 9. Ability to read and understand written instructions and complete accurate mathematical calculations. 10. Ability to perform strenuous physical activity including safely lifting and maneuvering various heavy objects. 11. Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with professional composure, diffuse potentially confrontational situations and resolve disputes. 12. Ability to follow City and public safety guidelines and protocols and perform job functions in a safe manner. 13. Knowledge of the types of meters, tools and repair equipment currently in use by the City. 2. Knowledge of the layout of city streets. 3. Knowledge of safety standards and practices in water distribution and maintenance. 4. Skill in the use and care of tools/materials used in maintaining and repairing meters. 5. Ability to be accurate in reading meters and maintain meter routes according to City standards. 6. Ability to use common sense and apply safe work habits when working in traffic or dangerous areas.**Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: PARKS, ARTS, AND RECREATION** 1. Knowledge in aquatic facility risk, water chemistry, disinfection, filtration, mechanical systems, operations, repair and safety. 2. Knowledge of hazards associated with public aquatic facilities and the conditions that can cause those hazards, including confined space entry, hot work, chemical safety, and blood borne pathogens. 3. Skill in winterization and de-winterization processes. 4. Ability to install, troubleshoot and repair drinking fountains. 5. Ability to calculate chemical needs and accurately maintain chlorine and PH levels in public aquatic facilities.**Experience/Education:** 1. High school diploma or GED and one (1) year experience in specialty area (i.e. landscaping, building maintenance, streets, etc.) is preferred; 2. **OR** a combination of experience, certification, education and training that demonstrates expertise in the related areas.**Special Requirements:** 1. Experience operating heavy machinery is preferred. 2. Some positions MAY require the employee to obtain additional special certification(s) within timelines specified by the state of Washington or the City of Olympia. The following are examples based on area of assignment: a. Valid Washington State drivers' license or a commercial driver’s license (CDL) Class A. b. Confined space entry and flagger certifications. c. First aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification. d. Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) certification. e. City crews often work in highly visible locations and may be required to respond to questions from interested citizens. It is important for all employees to respond to citizens with tact and patience. 3.
