The AmeriCorps Field Logistics Technician (FLT) provides leadership and support to multiple field crews, and assistance to field staff in seasonal trainings and logistical coordination. The FLT ensures that field crews are prepared to perform high-quality conservation service in a positive, safe, and productive environment. Support of field crews and operations may include (but is not limited to):
- Working with crews at their project sites
- Assisting with training crew leaders and members
- Performing project site visits; managing logistics for crews
- Maintaining tools and equipment
- Data entry and project administration tasks in the field office
- Assisting with crew member recruitment efforts
- Developing positive, lasting relationships with project partners
The FLT term of service is approximately 10 months, spanning 3 field seasons (Spring, Summer, Fall). This position involves frequent travel, camping, irregular hours, and a varying weekly schedule. The FLT must have strong leadership and communication skills, flexibility, capacity for self-direction, a passion for conservation work, and a desire to provide mentorship to emerging conservation leaders. The AmeriCorps Field Logistics Technicians will be supervised by the UCC Field Staff.
Projects & Schedule
UCC operates three 12-week field seasons throughout the year. The FLT begins their term of service prior to the start of spring field season. During this time, FLTs become familiar with their responsibilities and assist regional staff with preparation for spring training. The spring season is dedicated to the development of Crew Leaders through formal training and peer-led project work. FLTs will participate in the Crew Leaders’ training period, then participate in project work with Crew Leaders for the remainder of the spring season (March – May). During our summer and fall field seasons, FLTs assist field staff with logistical coordination and support field crews.
Field projects may be backcountry (hiking into the project site, camping away from a vehicle) or front country (driving to the project site daily, camping at the vehicle, or non-camp lodging). Projects may be urban (located in a city or town) or rural (located in national parks, forests, etc. with limited access to facilities and services). Project work will vary due to seasonality and environmental safety concerns. Projects may include (but are not limited to):
- Trail construction and maintenance
- Invasive species management, including herbicide application
- Habitat restoration
- Fence installation/repair/removal
- Land management inventory and mapping
- Recreational facilities maintenance and construction
- Recreation signage repair
- Community service
- National disaster response efforts
Every crew will have unique projects and travel schedules. Crews may be on ‘hitch’ for 4-14 days, working 10- hours/day (some days may be up to 12 hours/day), while camping in front and backcountry settings. Typically, crews will have 3-5 days off between hitches. Crews should expect project schedules and project work to vary. Days will include two 15-minute breaks and one 30-minute lunch. (The 30-minute lunch break does not count toward term of service hours).
FLTs may or may not be on a typical ‘hitch’ schedule as outlined above. The FLT schedule is highly variable depending on the field office and the project needs. FLTs report to field staff at their assigned regional office.
FLTs may be deployed on AmeriCorps Disaster Response Team mission assignments to support preparedness, response, and recovery activities in communities impacted by disasters.
The Field Logistics Technician position is an AmeriCorps 1700 hour term requiring a full-time commitment during the field season.
