Manager, Assistive Technology

Position Summary The Manager of Assistive Technology will oversee the Alternate Format Text (AFT) production and distribution process. This position is responsible for meeting the assistive technology (AT) needs of students with approved accommodations, remediating scanned readings, creating alternate text for images, and teaching students how to use assistive technology such as text‑to‑speech (TTS) and computer screen readers. The Manager will set up class‑room aids and review requests for AT accommodations, rendering decisions on reasonable and appropriate accommodations, and will serve as a liaison between faculty and staff. Essential Functions Oversee the AFT production program for enrolled students, ensuring accuracy, quality, and timely delivery of materials, preparing and remediating exams, maintaining records, and recommending process improvements. Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate Alternate Format Production Assistants, ensuring compliance with production standards and accessibility best practices. Engage in the interactive process to implement reasonable AT accommodations, reviewing disability documentation, conducting AT needs assessments, and processing accommodation requests. Maintain and support assistive technology used in the SDS Testing Center, computer labs, classrooms, and experiential learning environments in coordination with IT and campus partners; manage procurement, inventory, and lifecycle replacement of AT resources. Support students with sensory disabilities, oversee sign language/CART accommodations, and provide AT training for students and faculty. Deliver individual and group AT training and guidance for faculty and staff to promote effective and accessible instructional practices. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to remediate inaccessible instructional and assessment materials to provide equitable access for students with disabilities. Working knowledge of accessibility features and standards within Adobe Acrobat and Windows and iOS operating systems. Proficiency with assistive technologies, including screen readers, speech‑to‑text software, Braille translation tools, and related hardware and software (e.g., Kurzweil, JAWS, Dragon Naturally Speaking, JamWorks, Braille translation software, assistive listening devices). Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, including troubleshooting hardware and software issues and developing effective accessibility solutions. Effective communication skills in writing and verbally with students, faculty, staff, parents, and professional partners. Excellent time‑management skills, meeting strict deadlines and responding promptly to multiple stakeholder requests. Data analysis skills to identify trends and prepare reports to support decision making and program improvement. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to work independently and collaboratively. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in education, information technology, assistive technology, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred. Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with AT for students with disabilities in education. Expertise in a range of assistive software technologies. Knowledge of learning theories, instructional design, and Universal Design for Learning concepts. 0–2 years of professional experience; 2–4 years preferred. Experience supervising, evaluating, and training staff. Experience interpreting federal laws and regulations governing services to people with disabilities, including the ADA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree in a related area and eight (8) years of professional experience. Ability to develop, implement, and assess new programs and services, and experience working in a dynamic and diverse setting. Experience leading outreach strategies that connect students to academic, social, and wellness resources across the institution. Strong analytical and assessment skills, with the ability to use data to inform decision‑making, measure program effectiveness, and drive continuous improvement. Working Environment Standard office environment with occasional interruptions and moderate to high stress. Work onsite 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m., with occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays. Flexible work arrangements may be available with supervisor approval. Schedule Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Salary and Benefits Salary Grade 9. Hourly rate $33.21.
