Under the general directions of the Animal Services Manager, the Animal Services Officer will be expected to answer incoming calls regarding lost and stray animals, handle the safe transport of these animals and provide them with the utmost care. You will be responsible for investigating bite cases and preparing rabies specimens for intake. Much of your day will be spent around animals. This position will enhance team building skills and your knowledge of animal wildlife operations. It is your priority to deliver excellent customer service to our citizens while maintaining the City of Cibolo’s efforts to enhance our Animal Shelter.

Essential Functions:

1. Provides animal care by ensuring that vaccination and deworming is done properly; providing baths to animals; feeding all animals and maintaining dietary control; cleaning cages and spraying environments to kill and prevent pests and infectious agents; and providing transportation for animals.
2. Impounds animals by locating animals in the wild and containing them; receiving animals from citizens; assessing the health and identity of animals; checking animals for features to assist with documentation and profiling; taking pictures of animals and filing reports; inspecting animals for health concerns and taking appropriate action with doctors; and maintaining clean and accurate records for the shelter.
3. Performs animal ownership and exchange duties by filing paperwork for adoption; handling funds for necessary expenses regarding the transfer of animal ownership; interacting with owners to determine eligibility; investigating surrender cases to determine animal health and temperament; and providing receipts and health certificates when applicable.
4. Transports and manages animals by locating and handling animals in the wild; determining the danger of animals and either capturing or exterminating them based on professional evaluation; cleaning roadkill and picking up carcasses; disposing of dead animals when applicable; and assisting injured animals and providing them shelter if possible.
5. Restraining animals up to 200 pounds intermittently, lifting animals up to 50 pounds, and lifting animals over 50 pounds with help.
6. Ability to maintain an alertness level to keep safe from possible danger, resilience after disappointment or constructive feedback, compassion, to follow the ethical guidelines of your profession and the Cibolo Police Department, powers of keen observation for patient care, excellent reading/comprehension/legible writing skills, ability to negotiate with difficult people and problem solve and the ability to make rational and effective decisions.
7. Always keep team mentality in mind, be prepared and willing to help and ask for assistance when needed, keep a positive professional outlook, completely abstain from gossip/negative observation regarding clients/team members or other professionals or other behavior that can whittle away at the healthy foundation of a team.
8. Attend staff meetings, participate in department functions like an open house, community efforts, and special events. Be prepared to present topics at the occasional staff meetings.
9. Moving animals from cage to cage, inside to outside, room to room.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Knowledge and understanding of the mission statement of the City of Cibolo Animal Services Department.
• Knowledge of animal types, species, and breed identification
• Knowledge of Animal Behaviors.
• Knowledge of humane animal care, capture, and restraint.
• Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
• Ability to utilize animal restraint equipment safely and effectively.
• Ability to work rotating schedules including nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Apply knowledge and skills in controlling/handling individual animal temperament.
• Ability to gain animal confidence when restraining them for transport, grooming and/or treatment.
• Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
• Ability to perform moderately heavy physical labor.
• Ability to use cleaning materials and equipment with skill and efficiency.
• Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area and volume
• Ability to take a teamwork approach to the job by cooperating with others, offering to help others when needed, and considering larger organization or team goals rather than individual concerns. Includes the ability to build a constructive team spirit where team members are committed to the goals and objectives of the team.

Qualifications:

• High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED).
• Minimum of one (1) year of professional animal handling experience.
• Valid Texas DSHS Animal Control Officer Basic Training certification within six (6) months of date of hire.
• Pre-exposure rabies shots within six (6) months of date of hire.
• Valid Texas Class C Driver’s License.
• Cybersecurity and CJIS training; must maintain

Compensation: $19.17/hr. to $25.18/hr. (DOE). Full-time (40 hours a week).
