About the Program

The Family Medicine Residency Program is a well-established, academically rigorous training initiative that offers comprehensive Family Medicine education and has a long-standing tradition of cultivating outstanding physicians. The program accommodates 24 residents (8-8-8) and is hosted at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine.

Graduates from our program embark on diverse career trajectories, including inpatient medicine, outpatient primary care, obstetrics, rural and urban practices, as well as pursuing additional fellowship training. The residency is supported by a large, dedicated faculty and strong collaborations across the extensive network of residency and fellowship programs.

Position Summary

The Program Director acts as the physician leader for the Family Medicine Residency Program, ensuring adherence to all Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) standards while advancing the educational mission and strategic vision of the program.

In close collaboration with the Residency Program Manager, the Program Director oversees the residency curriculum, faculty educational initiatives, resident development, accreditation compliance, and overall program operations.

This role is structured as follows:

• 0.6 FTE for Administrative Leadership

• 0.1 FTE for Direct Educational Activities/Resident Teaching

• 0.3 FTE for Clinical Practice

Clinical responsibilities may encompass outpatient, inpatient, or a combination of Family Medicine practice, with outpatient care primarily based at Family Medicine practices in Portland and/or Falmouth.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide strategic leadership and vision for the Family Medicine Residency Program

• Ensure compliance with all ACGME accreditation standards and requirements

• Oversee the development, implementation, and continuous enhancement of the curriculum

• Support and supervise faculty in their educational roles

• Foster an inclusive, supportive, and high-performing learning environment

• Lead resident recruitment, selection, evaluation, and professional growth

• Collaborate with departmental, institutional, and graduate medical education leaders

• Engage in teaching, mentorship, and scholarly activities

• Encourage innovation and excellence in Family Medicine education

• Maintain an active clinical practice in line with residency program leadership responsibilities

Qualifications

• MD or DO degree

• Board Certified in Family Medicine

• Eligible for medical licensure in the State of Maine

• A minimum of three years of documented educational and/or administrative experience that aligns with ACGME Program Director requirements

• Prior leadership experience in graduate medical education, residency education, academic medicine, or similar environments

• A demonstrated commitment to Family Medicine education and resident development

Compensation packages may include, depending on eligibility, recruitment bonuses, relocation assistance, productivity incentives, and quality incentives.

The annual base salary for this position ranges from $276,812 to $296,125.
