Retail Refrigeration Technician

The purpose of this position is to support the retail refrigeration operations in performing rack refrigeration general maintenance, HVAC repair and maintenance, and routine general refrigeration maintenance service requests for retail stores. This position also performs special refrigeration projects for retail facilities and assists with the implementation of corporate projects.

Responsibilities include:

• performing refrigeration repairs, HVAC repairs, self-contained case repairs, some rack refrigeration general maintenance and repairs on retail facilities
• performing housekeeping duties.

Required Qualifications

• HVAC or Refrigeration Trade School completion or equivalent
• At least three (3) years working in HVAC/refrigeration in either service or construction discipline OR at least one (1) year as a supermarket Refrigeration Technician
• must be at least 21 years old and have a valid driver license
• EPA Universal License
• advanced knowledge of refrigerant management and usage
• ability to program and calibrate dew point sensors
• advanced knowledge of positive store pressure and how to diagnose and resolve pressure differentials
• knowledge of electric resistance heating
• knowledge of heat recovery for water heating and air heat recovery for dehumidification and space heating
• knowledge of electric hot water heating systems
• knowledge of air flow properties within the case and understand the importance of maintaining the air curtain
• knowledge of evaporator coil operation and components
• ability to train
• time management skills
• intermediate knowledge in Food Safety
• ability to analyze information and data
• ability to communicate both verbally and in written format
• interpersonal skills and the ability to manage a group of people
• must be able to lift/lower/climb ladders/walk on roofs
• willingness to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and travel with overnight stays

Preferred Qualifications

• Five (5) or more years working in HVAC/refrigeration in either service or construction disciplines OR two (2) more years working as a supermarket Refrigeration Technician
• knowledge of Isometric drawings for all utilities
• ability to interpret building drawings and piping diagrams
• understand Mechanical plans
• basic understanding of the use of dry nitrogen
• advanced understanding of electrical concepts, practices and codes
• intermediate knowledge of electrical systems and mechanics including diagnostics and repairs
• intermediate knowledge and application of lubricants
• ability to center and adjust both single and multi V Belt sheaves for proper alignment and tension
• ability to change both single V Belt and multiple V Belt sheaves
• ability to replace seal and impeller
• ability to diagnose and replace drive motor
• ability to isolate, evacuate and change the liquid pump
• ability to valve off the suction service valve to determine valve plate condition
• ability to troubleshoot compressor unloaders
• ability to change compressor oil and clean oil pick up screen
• ability to verify the net oil pressure using gauges
• ability to safely remove and replace compressors as required
• ability to determine the heat of rejection or delta across the condenser by using pressure gauges and temperature probes
• ability to diagnose various reasons for high discharge pressure
• ability to diagnose and replace a failed fan motor
• ability to diagnose and repair a failed 3 way or split valve
• basic knowledge of liquid sub-cooling
• knowledge of short circuit hoods
• knowledge of gas and electric space heating systems
• ability to perform rupture basin alarm testing
• ability to identify DX versus glycol evaporator coils
• knowledge of mass flow and set balancing valves
• ability to identify a liquid CO2 evaporator coil
• basic knowledge of Publix Retail store operations
• knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs)
