Secondary Special Education Teacher – Barrington Middle School Barrington Public Schools, Barrington Middle School – Barrington, Rhode Island Starting Date: Aug 24, 2026 Job Description Secondary Special Education Teacher Title: Secondary Special Education Teacher Qualifications Secondary Special Education Teacher Certification granted by the Rhode Island Department of Education Experience providing Specially Designed Instruction (SDI), developing and implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and collaborating on a multi‑disciplinary team Master’s Degree preferred Experience with developing and implementing transition IEPs Commitment to diversity, inclusion, respect, and equity in education Reports To Building Administrator / Director of Pupil Personnel Job Goal To provide special education to support the academic achievement, social/behavioral skills, and emotional well‑being of Barrington students. Performance Responsibilities Adheres to federal and state special education regulations. Communicates high and clear expectations for students. Instills a growth mindset in students. Fosters independence and grit in all learners. Evidences knowledge and understanding of high and low incidence disabilities. Demonstrates knowledge and skills in providing Specially Designed Instruction (SDI). Provides special education to students in the general education classroom and special class settings. Provides evidence‑based academic instruction and interventions in accordance with ESSA and student IEPs. Provides evidenced‑based interventions in the areas of executive functioning and social/emotional and behavior. Provides transition services. Administers and analyzes a variety of assessments (academic achievement, diagnostic, screening, progress monitoring, observations, etc.) and shares findings with key stakeholders. Develops, implements, and monitors meaningful and measurable IEPs and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs). Provides consultation to teachers regarding accommodations and modifications. Coordinates the support services of Teacher Assistants for students on caseload. Communicates regularly with students and parents about academic, behavioral, social/emotional needs and progress; reports urgent concerns immediately. Serves as a member of Evaluation and IEP Teams. Facilitates meetings. Collects and analyzes student progress monitoring data to make instructional decisions. Communicates regularly with Building Administrators and Director and Assistant Director of Pupil Personnel. Has solid knowledge of the Common Core State Standards and Essential Elements. Follows school policy and procedures, respecting professional boundaries. Identifies student needs and collaborates with other staff to resolve learning problems. Maintains thorough records for each student. Attends staff development, curriculum meetings, and professional activities. Creates and implements performance tasks, formative and summative assessments aligned to Common Core and 21st‑century skills. Disseminates accurate and positive information about school and district initiatives. Supports efficient, effective, and collaborative management of school operations. Utilizes understanding of students’ interests and experiences to create connections to content. Designs lessons that extend beyond factual recall, encouraging higher‑level cognitive skills and inquiry. Creates learning groups for collaboration and independence. Uses varied communication strategies to engage students and enrich discourse. Provides students opportunities to self‑evaluate and set learning goals. Implements federal, state, district, and school initiatives to improve teaching and learning. Interacts professionally, fairly, and equitably with students, colleagues, parents, and agencies. Exhibits reliable attendance, punctuality, and professional ethics; completes required forms and data accurately and timely. Performs additional duties as assigned. Pedagogies for Deep Learning Provides opportunities for reading high‑quality texts and applying knowledge through discussions, writing, and project‑based learning. Develops knowledge of culturally responsive and sustaining teaching practices. Applies research‑based best instructional practices to deliver curriculum. Plans and prepares lessons using the Deep Learning Design Template. Requires students to engage in high‑level activities such as application, analysis, and inquiry. Working Conditions and Physical Requirements The employee regularly operates a keyboard, views a computer screen, and sits or stands for extended periods. Required vision includes close vision and ability to adjust focus. The employee frequently bends, stoops, kneels, reaches, grasps, manipulates items, moves between locations, lifts up to 30 pounds, and follows restraints procedures. Communication requires hearing and responding to voice and other sounds in small and large settings with background noise.
