Lead Sign Language Interpreter (Sign Language Interpreter Lead)Institution: North Hennepin Community CollegeClassification Title: Sign Language Interpreter LeadBargaining Unit / Union: 214: Minnesota Association of Professional EmployeesCity: Brooklyn ParkFLSA: Non Job ExemptFull Time / Part Time: Full timeEmployment Condition: Classified - UnlimitedSalary Range: $27.83 - $40.63 per hourJob DescriptionThe Lead American Sign Language Interpreter plays a vital role in advancing equitable access to educational opportunities by providing impartial and accurate American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting services for students and NHCC employees who are deaf or hard of hearing. This position may also serve other constituents when needed. This position also leads efforts to promote equity and inclusion by advancing best practices that support, empower, and enhance access for the Deaf & Hard of hearing community at NHCC, while providing administrative support and customer service support, contributing to and collaboration on departmental projects, and managing technologies that enhance departmental operations and service delivery.Minimum QualificationsHold current interpreter or transliterator certificates awarded by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), or the general level interpreter proficiency certificate awarded by the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) Level III or higher (IV or V), or a comparable state certification from the commissioner of education and satisfactorily complete an interpreter/transliterator training program affiliated with an accredited educational institution; or hold a certified deaf interpreter certification issued by RID. At least two years of experience as a sign language interpreter. Proven experience and processing of auditory and visual information and formulation of an accurate interpretation of another's intent, spirit, and sophistication of language. Current working knowledge and understanding of computer software used as assistive technology (e.g. MS Office applications, Read & Write Gold, Adobe Pro, JAWS, etc.) The ability to work independently and as part of a team Ability to identify and accommodate Deaf Hard of Hearing individuals' language preferences and comprehension level, including attention to dialect. The ability to work within a team; be amenable to cross-training; and build good working relationships with other staff, faculty, students, and the general public. Physical Requirements Ability to communicate in spoken English and American Sign Language (ASL), including the ability to accurately receive, process, and convey information between both languages. The position requires frequent movement throughout the building(s). This position may require occasional transporting such articles as file boxes and office equipment (i.e., chairs) or heavier materials with help from others, and/or transporting light objects frequently.Preferred QualificationBachelor's degree in American Sign Language (ASL) from an accredited institution Four years working as an American Sign Language interpreter Experience in working in a disability related field or higher education Knowledge of best practices as defined in the Association of Higher Education on Disability and the Commission on Rehabilitation Counseling Knowledge of disability related resources, agencies, and various types of adaptive software/equipment Experience with ISRS and/or ImageNow or CRM software Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite Proficiency in adaptive technologiesOther RequirementsApplication must include: Letter of interest Resume Work Shift Monday - Thursday (8:30 am - 5:30 pm) Friday (8:30 am - 3 pm) With flexibility based on student scheduling needs.
