Job Description

The Phlebotomist II supports a busy clinical laboratory by performing high-quality blood draws and specimen collection, troubleshooting issues, assisting with training, and recommending workflow improvements. This role focuses on accurate specimen handling, exceptional patient interaction, and strict adherence to laboratory protocols and safety regulations in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

• Perform venipuncture and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles with a high level of accuracy and patient care.
• Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and test requirements.
• Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols.
• Package specimens for transport and maintain specimen integrity by following temperature, container, and labeling requirements.
• Update patient information and maintain accurate records in laboratory systems and documentation tools.
• Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks in accordance with laboratory procedures.
• Understand and fully interpret physicians’ orders to ensure appropriate specimen collection and processing.
• Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety standards in the laboratory environment.
• Attend annual department trainings and stay current with procedural updates and regulatory requirements.
• Answer telephone calls, provide courteous customer service, and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries within established guidelines.
• Contribute to workflow optimization by identifying issues, assisting with troubleshooting, and making recommendations for process improvements.
• Support training efforts by demonstrating proper phlebotomy and specimen handling techniques to colleagues as needed.

• Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
• Minimum of 2 years of professional phlebotomy experience, including at least 6 months performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
• Proven proficiency in venipuncture, blood draws, and specimen collection using straight needles and butterfly needles.
• Strong attention to detail in labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and storing specimens according to test orders and protocols.
• Ability to accurately match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify test requisitions or computer labels against scripts.
• Working knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations and commitment to following all safety and compliance standards.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation, communication, and data entry tasks.
• High School Diploma or GED.
• Demonstrated customer service skills, including clear, courteous communication with patients and clinical staff.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced clinical or hospital laboratory environment.

• Experience updating patient information and maintaining accurate laboratory records.
• Comfort reading and communicating laboratory results to support inquiries within defined protocols.
• Ability to assist in troubleshooting specimen collection or processing issues and recommend workflow improvements.
• Willingness to attend annual department trainings and adapt to new procedures and regulatory changes.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple specimens and tasks simultaneously.
• Reliable, professional demeanor with a focus on patient care and quality laboratory practices.

This position is based in a fast-paced clinical laboratory setting with regular interaction with patients, clinical staff, and laboratory personnel. The work schedule typically includes Monday through Friday hours with additional Saturday shifts as required. The role involves frequent standing, walking, and manual handling of specimens, as well as working with centrifuges, specimen storage equipment, and computer systems. Staff follow established safety protocols, including OSHA and DEP regulations, and use appropriate protective equipment as required for specimen collection, processing, and decontamination tasks.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Mountain Lakes, NJ.

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $25.00/hr.

This is a fully onsite position in Mountain Lakes,NJ.
