Psychiatry - Emergency Department Physician

Atrium Health Behavioral Health Charlotte is seeking a full-time Psychiatry - Emergency Department Physician responsible for providing direct clinical care to adult patients, with some involvement in care for children and adolescents. The role also includes participation in administrative and employee-related activities, such as medical staff committees, process improvement, staff meetings, and performance reviews. Clinical assignments may include inpatient, outpatient, and emergency services, with after-hours and holiday coverage shared among psychiatrists.

Highlights include:

• Direct Clinical Care: Conducts psychiatric assessments and develops treatment plans for voluntary and involuntary patients.
• Team Collaboration: Works closely with physicians across departments and institutions to ensure high-quality clinical service.
• Administrative Participation: Engages in staff meetings, committees, and performance reviews.
• Legal and Policy Compliance: Maintains familiarity and compliance with legal statutes (e.g., involuntary commitment, confidentiality, EMTALA) and organizational policies.
• Professionalism: Serves as a role model for organizational values, fosters a positive work environment, and demonstrates commitment to high-quality performance.
• Supervision and Teaching: Supervises and teaches medical, psychology, and nursing trainees; interacts with external agencies to strengthen relationships.
• Communication: Responds promptly to communications and presents patient information to insurance companies as needed.
• Work Environment: Ability to work in high-volume, high-pressure settings and interact effectively with patients and families.

Training and/or Experience Required:

• Medical Degree: M.D. or D.O.
• Residency: Completion of a residency in psychiatry.
• Certification: Board certification or eligibility in psychiatry.
• Licensure: North Carolina Medical License and DEA number.
• Hospital Privileges: Privileges to practice psychiatry at CMC.
• Skills: Fluency in English, ability to coordinate and direct others, maintain up-to-date knowledge of best practices, and demonstrate creativity and leadership.
