Current Openings Location: 82 Washington Street, Poughkeepsie, NY Job Id: 2079 # of Openings: 1 Division: Clinical Laboratory Classification: Non‑Exempt Reports to: Director of Laboratory Summary/Primary Role The Lead Phlebotomist functions under the supervision of the Laboratory Manager/Director in the daily operation of all Phlebotomy draw centers. The Lead functions as a resource to other phlebotomists in following good clinical Laboratory Practice for the collection and transportation of samples. The Lead Phlebotomist will ensure each location is staffed appropriately and may at times require travel to cover a location if staffing is needed. Responsibilities Verifies clinical lab test orders and brings discrepancies to the attention of appropriate clinical staff. Verifies patient information with two patient identifiers. Deciphers best method for obtaining blood sample depending on the specific patient. Obtains blood specimens by performing venipunctures and fingersticks. Disposes of contaminated sharps in accordance with applicable laws, standards and policies. Tracks collected specimens by initialing, dating and noting times of collection; maintains daily tallies of collections performed. Maintains quality results by following department procedures and complying with legal regulations. Practices infection control standards at all times when working with patients and equipment. Determines appropriate specimen requirements and prepares samples to be sent to reference lab. Provides training and competency assessment of new employees. Ensures proper coverage of all patient draw centers with adequate staffing. Assists in managing employee time off to ensure adequate staffing at all locations. Assists with inventory across all sites. Other duties as assigned. Requirements High school diploma or equivalent and completion of an approved phlebotomy training course. Minimum 5 years’ phlebotomy experience. Proficiency in collecting blood samples. Ability to communicate in a professional, courteous and efficient manner. Knowledge of laboratory computer preferred. Supervisory Responsibility This position does have supervisory responsibility. Expected Hours of Work An Employee must work a minimum of thirty (30) hours each week to maintain full‑time status for benefits purposes, however the expectations of the position will require an average of forty (40) hours with overtime required as scheduled. Non‑exempt employees are eligible for overtime pay in accordance with applicable wage and hour laws, while exempt employees may be required to work additional hours as necessary to fulfill their job responsibilities. Overtime requirements will be determined based on the operational needs of the organization. The salary range and/or hourly rate listed is a good faith determination of potential base compensation that may be offered to a successful applicant for this position at the time of this job advertisement and may be modified in the future. When determining an employee’s base salary and/or rate, several factors may be considered as applicable (e.g., location, specialty, years of relevant experience, education, credentials, and internal equity). Travel Requirements Required to float to all sites as operationally necessary. Work Environment This position operates in a clinical outpatient setting and routinely involves direct interaction with patients, providers, and clinical staff. The work environment may involve exposure to infectious disease, bodily fluids, medical equipment, cleaning agents, and varying patient conditions. Standard precautions, PPE, and adherence to safety protocols are required at all times. Physical Demands This is a safety‑sensitive position, requiring alertness, sound judgment, and adherence to patient safety standards at all times. Regularly required to stand, walk, and move between rooms throughout the day. Frequent bending, reaching, and lifting or moving supplies and equipment up to 25 pounds. Ability to communicate clearly in person, by phone, and through electronic systems.
