Responsibilities Underwrite new business and renewals in a profitable manner according to authority level and established guidelines. Assign larger, more important and complex accounts and utilize underwriting tools to determine accurate classifications, rates, and premium charges. Understand state laws, including cancellation and non‑renewal, within the assigned territory to transact business correctly. Apply appropriate coverage forms and policy language, including exclusions, and resolve premium audit disputes with agents and brokers. Promote the growth and development of less experienced underwriters and foster teamwork. Review, analyze, accept, and decline property risks to ensure profitability for Markel. Underwrite and select new business that will produce an underwriting profit. Manage an existing renewal book and implement corrective measures to meet profitability expectations. Communicate with regional managers and national product line leaders regarding individual accounts, producers, and recommend operational, system, or procedural improvements. Participate in audits and/or underwriting meetings as required. Build and maintain quality relationships with key producers while monitoring the entire appointed producer base for profitability and production. Review competitor forms and pricing and effectively market the Markel product within the competitive landscape. Requirements Minimum 3+ years of current property underwriting expertise. Demonstrated technical knowledge and skills reflective of progression to positions with increasing responsibility. Demonstrated marketing and relationship‑building skills. Four‑year college degree desired; insurance designations a plus. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Strong analytical and organizational skills. Team player who enjoys a flexible and spontaneous business environment. 20% travel in the Central Region of the US. US work authorization required. Pay Information The base salary offered for the successful candidate will be based on compensable factors such as job‑relevant education, experience, training, licensure, demonstrated competencies, geographic location, and other factors. The national average salary range for the Sr. Underwriter is $92,880 - $127,710 with 25% incentive.
