Position Summary This position is responsible for operating multiple Veolia contracted client water and wastewater facilities. The primary purpose of this position is to cover vacations & absences at existing facilities, assist in the training and development of local operations teams, and serve in a support role at new account start‑ups. Responsibilities include process changes to meet compliance, troubleshooting processes & equipment, maintenance (routine, reactive, and preventive), process & compliance sampling, laboratory testing, and writing and distributing a daily shift report. In between time at designated accounts, the position will also develop training resources for general water and wastewater industry knowledge and site‑specific treatment training for all technicians in the region. Significant travel is required, ranging from 1–2 weeks to up to a month for extended circumstances. Essential Operational Duties and Responsibilities Maintain complete operational coverage of the Veolia operated facilities in your designated region as vacations and unplanned absences arise, covering both day and night shifts with significant schedule flexibility. Assist in the operational development of all local technicians within your region through in‑person hands‑on training visits, electronic training material development, and directing individual training efforts. Ensure that industry standards and best practices are implemented, including recordkeeping, lab testing procedures, operational practices, and preventative maintenance. Support new account start‑up projects by working closely with the Senior Wastewater Operational Technician team to develop operational tasks, procedures, and goals. Provide knowledgeable support to local technicians for troubleshooting process issues and ensuring proactive decision‑making. Operate and control electric motors, pumps, and valves to regulate flow of water into the wastewater treatment plant. Collect and test wastewater samples to determine concentration levels and impurities at the designated testing frequency. Maintain accurate record keeping of client data such as residual chemical content, water turbidity, and pressure. Comply with all Veolia and multiple safety parameters/programs. Analyze lab data to uncover potential treatment issues and implement process changes to prevent non‑compliance. Compile data for the Environmental Protection Agency or state regulatory bodies as required. Coordinate with other operators throughout the facility to maintain wastewater treatment equipment. Consult with management to determine the best treatment methods for the wastewater plant. Essential Maintenance Duties and Responsibilities Coordinate with the multiple to schedule third‑party maintenance support for all projects outside Veolia's scope. Complete all preventative maintenance defined by Veolia and multiple management at the designated frequency, documenting each task. Assist in completing all minor maintenance projects, including chemical pump repair & replacement, small PVC piping installation, valve replacement, AOD pump repairs, and check‑valve cleanouts. Assist in completing all intermediate maintenance projects, such as replacing mechanical pump seals, packing seals, impellers, full PVC line replacements, and centrifuge pump replacements. Supervisory Responsibilities Willingness and availability to work with fellow operators on off‑shifts when problems arise. 24/7 availability to the wastewater operators and multiple management. Communicate frequently with the Veolia Account Manager about plant operations, compliance, maintenance, and personnel issues. Provide supervision and leadership to the team, exemplifying hard work, attention to detail, fair treatment, and taking responsibility for results. Provide direction on daily operation and maintenance, including process changes, chemical feed rates, maintenance activities, and additional sampling. Provide training and/or facilitate training of operators for all facets of operation and management. Deliver clear verbal and written instructions regarding proper operation and maintenance, and create & maintain facility‑specific SOPs. Continuously optimize plant operations, chemistry, and equipment to improve efficiency and reduce costs. Innovation / Planning / Budget Develop creative and innovative ideas related to improving processes and operations within the department. Manage inventories of lab supplies, consumables, and equipment parts; no responsibility for administering a budget. Manage the maintenance program inventory, consumables, and equipment parts. Decision Making Receive assignments with results, due dates, and general procedures to follow. Make process changes based on lab data and general process knowledge to correct compliance issues or improve treatment. Handle independent action and judgment for common problems; refer unusual cases to the supervisor. Discuss significant issues with the account manager to ensure actions are reasonable and contract‑compliant. Evaluate other operators' skills to assign tasks such as lab analyses, preventive maintenance, chemical inventory management, and waste disposal. Evaluate maintenance projects and coordinate outside support as needed. Participate in team meetings and discussions; collaborate regularly with team members. Ensure coverage of absences to maintain uninterrupted facility coverage. Maintain continuous communication with client and Veolia management. Communicate training progress and overall site status to Veolia management. General Education And Experience Requirements High school diploma or equivalent required. Proficiency with Microsoft Office or Google equivalent required. Strong mechanical aptitude preferred. Strong verbal and written communication skills required. Willingness to learn and follow instructions on wastewater treatment processes. Operational experience with site‑specific equipment preferred, including 3+ years in wastewater treatment plant operations or related field. Prior experience in a traveling work role preferred. Working Conditions The job is performed in wastewater treatment plants and outdoors, exposing the employee to extreme weather, burns, chemicals, electrical hazards, and loud noises. The position requires lifting or carrying up to 75 pounds, climbing a vertical ladder up to 30 feet, standing for long periods, walking on uneven surfaces, using extension ladders daily, and maneuvering into tight spaces. The role requires flexibility for day and night shifts, 12‑hour shifts as needed, and availability for emergency call‑ins or phone support.
