About the Opportunity

RCI Energy Services is seeking an ambitious and technically driven Engineering Intern who wants to gain practical experience in utility-scale solar, battery energy storage, electrical power systems, and renewable energy infrastructure.

This opportunity is designed for engineering students interested in working beyond the classroom and developing a deeper understanding of how large-scale energy systems are commissioned, operated, maintained, and optimized.

Working alongside RCI's technical leadership, project management, and operations teams, the selected intern will gain exposure to engineering analysis, system performance evaluation, electrical equipment, technical documentation, and problem-solving within the renewable energy industry.

This is a primarily office-based engineering internship with opportunities to observe field operations and gain firsthand exposure to renewable energy facilities.

Key Responsibilities

Electrical Engineering & Technical Analysis

• Assist with reviewing electrical drawings, single-line diagrams, equipment specifications, and technical documentation.
• Support technical analysis of utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) and battery energy storage systems.
• Research electrical equipment, including inverters, transformers, switchgear, power conversion systems, and associated balance-of-system components.
• Assist in evaluating equipment performance, electrical system faults, and potential causes of system underperformance.
• Support the preparation of engineering calculations, technical reports, and equipment assessments under appropriate supervision.
• Develop an understanding of medium-voltage electrical systems, three-phase power distribution, and grid-connected renewable energy facilities.

Renewable Energy Systems & Performance

• Assist with analyzing solar and BESS performance data to identify trends, system inefficiencies, and potential reliability concerns.
• Review technical information associated with inverter faults, operational alarms, and equipment failures.
• Gain exposure to inverter diagnostics, battery energy storage technologies, and power conversion equipment.
• Support the analysis and organization of electrical testing results, including insulation resistance testing, IV curve tracing, infrared thermography, and transformer testing.
• Assist with identifying recurring technical issues and developing recommendations for equipment reliability and operational improvements.

Engineering Documentation & Project Support

• Assist in preparing technical scopes of work, inspection reports, equipment assessments, and project documentation.
• Support engineering-related activities associated with commissioning, preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance, and equipment replacement.
• Help organize equipment specifications, technical manuals, drawings, and project deliverables.
• Collaborate with project managers and technical personnel on equipment evaluations, technical planning, and project execution.
• Participate in technical discussions involving troubleshooting, equipment selection, and project requirements.

Data Analysis & Continuous Improvement

• Utilize Excel and other analytical tools to evaluate technical and operational data.
• Assist with developing equipment tracking systems, technical dashboards, and performance reports.
• Research emerging renewable energy technologies, electrical testing methods, and industry standards.
• Support initiatives focused on improving equipment reliability, service efficiency, and technical processes.

Field Engineering Exposure

• Participate in occasional supervised visits to utility-scale solar or battery energy storage facilities.
• Observe commissioning, electrical testing, maintenance, troubleshooting, and equipment inspections.
• Gain exposure to field safety procedures and the technical challenges associated with operating large-scale electrical infrastructure.
• Collaborate with field technicians and project leadership to understand how engineering concepts translate into practical applications.

All field activities will be conducted in accordance with RCI safety policies and applicable training, supervision, and qualification requirements.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

• Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Energy Systems Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
• Strong foundation in mathematics, physics, and engineering fundamentals.
• Demonstrated analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to interpret technical information and communicate findings effectively.
• Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple assignments.
• A genuine interest in renewable energy technologies and electrical power systems.

Preferred Qualifications

• Pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering with an interest in power systems or renewable energy.
• Completed coursework in electrical circuits, power systems, energy conversion, or related subjects.
• Familiarity with three-phase electrical systems, transformers, inverters, or power electronics.
• Exposure to AutoCAD, MATLAB, Python, ETAP, or similar engineering and analytical software.
• Familiarity with solar PV technology, energy storage systems, or utility-scale electrical infrastructure.
• Strong technical research and documentation skills.

Prior renewable energy industry experience is not required.
