You won't be shadowing. You'll be building.

Aegis designs and manufactures high-reliability power conversion products, the power supplies inside radar systems, avionics, shipboard electronics, and military ground vehicles. Hardware that has to work the first time, in the worst conditions, for years. Mission critical, every unit.

As an Aegis intern, you work on that hardware.

We are a smaller organization, and that changes what an internship looks like here. You won't be intern #47, assigned a make-work project nobody reads. You'll sit a few feet from the engineers who design the product, walk out to the floor where it gets built, and take it to the lab where it gets tested. In a single term you can follow a product from schematic to shipped unit and have your fingerprints on it.

Four days on. Three days in the mountains.

Our engineering and manufacturing teams work Monday through Thursday, 10 hours a day. That means every weekend is a three-day weekend, in the Smoky Mountains of western North Carolina.

Spend Fridays hiking the Nantahala National Forest, kayaking or swimming on Hiwassee Lake, paddling the local rivers, or just sitting back and relaxing. Murphy is a small mountain town with no rush-hour commute, and it sits within about two hours of Atlanta, Chattanooga, Knoxville, and Asheville when you want a city weekend instead.

Pick the track that fits you

Mechanical Engineering

Design the physical product, the chassis, housings, and heatsinks that let a power supply survive vibration, heat, and shock in military aircraft, ships, and ground vehicles.

You'll:

• Build detailed 3D models and turn them into production-ready 2D drawings
• Design chassis, housings, heatsinks, brackets, covers, and mechanical interfaces
• Take part in fit, form, function, thermal, and manufacturability reviews
• Convert legacy drawings into our current CAD platform while preserving design intent

Tools & skills: SolidWorks, GD&T, sheet metal and machined part design, thermal management

Good fit if: you already model for fun, and you want to see your part actually machined.

Electrical Engineering

Work the circuit side of a power supply, from the first calculation to the waveform on the scope.

You'll:

• Run power-supply circuit analysis and supporting engineering calculations
• Simulate designs in LTspice, PSpice, or MATLAB/Simulink
• Evaluate components against datasheets and support schematic development
• Compare calculated, simulated, and measured results in supervised bench testing — and chase down why they disagree

Tools & skills: LTspice, PSpice, MATLAB/Simulink, oscilloscopes, power electronics fundamentals

Good fit if: you want to find out whether the math you did in class actually predicts what the oscilloscope shows.

Computer Engineering / Firmware

Connect code to real hardware, on microcontroller-based products that ship to defense customers.

You'll:

• Develop and debug embedded firmware
• Support hardware/firmware integration and prototype bring-up
• Write test scripts and troubleshoot communication interfaces such as UART, SPI, I²C, and CAN
• Use debuggers, logic analyzers, and oscilloscopes to find where hardware and code disagree

Tools & skills: C, C++, Python, microcontrollers, Git, bench instrumentation

Good fit if: you've written C, C++, or Python and you want to see what happens when your code controls something physical.

LabVIEW Test Engineering

Automate the tests that qualify our products before they ship.

You'll:

• Build LabVIEW programs that control power supplies, electronic loads, multimeters, and oscilloscopes
• Turn manual bench procedures into automated test sequences with pass/fail limits and reports
• Wire test fixtures and troubleshoot test stations
• Support design verification: regulation, efficiency, ripple, and transient response

Tools & skills: LabVIEW, NI-VISA, GPIB/USB/LAN instrument control, TestStand, SCPI

Good fit if: you like the idea of writing code that physically moves instruments — and you want a skill defense and aerospace employers hire for by name.

What we're actually looking for:

You don't need a previous internship. Class projects, robotics, coding projects, design teams, car and motorcycle work, repair jobs, and things you built in your garage all count, tell us about them.

What matters:

• You're enrolled in a two-year, four-year, graduate, or technical degree program related to your track.
• You're genuinely curious about engineering, manufacturing, defense, or aerospace.
• You work through problems instead of guessing at them.
• You catch the details other people skip past.
• You ask questions when you're stuck, and you take feedback without getting defensive.
• You show up on time, ready to work, and you keep your area safe and organized.

Graduate students: you're welcome here. Project scope is matched to your experience, so a graduate intern can take on more design ownership or a deeper analysis project.

Common majors: Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electronics Engineering Technology, Engineering Technology, Mechatronics, Embedded Systems. Related fields are welcome,  if you think you fit, apply.

What you'll leave with

• A project you own and present to the Aegis team at the end of your term — something concrete to talk about in every interview you have afterward.
• Hands-on time with tools employers hire for by name: SolidWorks, LTspice, LabVIEW, embedded C.
• Real hours on real instruments, real hardware, and a real production floor.
• A working understanding of how a regulated defense and aerospace manufacturer actually operates.
• Mentorship from engineers who want to teach, and references from people who watched you work.
