Medical Director, Hematology and Medical Oncology

Location: Main Hospital Campus, Arlington, Virginia

We are excited to announce an opportunity for a seasoned, innovative, and collaborative Board-Certified Hematologist/Medical Oncologist to take on the role of the inaugural Medical Director for Hematology and Medical Oncology at our primary hospital campus in Arlington, Virginia. This position is part of our initiative to enhance our Oncology program.

This exceptional role offers the chance to lead and develop a comprehensive hematology and medical oncology program, supported by our Board of Directors, executive team, and philanthropic partners. The ideal candidate will possess extensive clinical knowledge, proven leadership skills, and a commitment to creating innovative, patient-focused oncology services within a thriving community-based academic setting.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver comprehensive outpatient and inpatient care in hematology and medical oncology.
• Assess and manage patients with solid tumors and both benign and malignant hematologic conditions.
• Create personalized treatment plans incorporating chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapies, and supportive oncology services.
• Conduct new patient consultations, follow-up appointments, treatment monitoring, and survivorship planning.
• Engage in shared call coverage and provide inpatient oncology consultations.
• Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to ensure evidence-based cancer care.
• Analyze pathology, imaging, molecular testing, and laboratory results to inform treatment decisions.
• Address treatment-related toxicities and manage symptom relief.
• Ensure timely and precise documentation in the electronic medical record system.

Medical Director Leadership Responsibilities

• Program Development & Growth:
  • Lead the establishment and expansion of the hematology and medical oncology service line.
  • Develop clinical workflows, operational frameworks, and care delivery models.
  • Collaborate with executive leadership on strategic planning and market growth initiatives.
  • Assist in the recruitment, onboarding, and retention of physicians and advanced practice providers (APPs).
  • Foster relationships with referring physicians and regional healthcare partners.
  • Identify opportunities for program expansion, subspecialty growth, and community outreach.
• Clinical Leadership:
  • Establish evidence-based clinical standards, pathways, and best practices.
  • Lead multidisciplinary tumor boards and cancer conferences.
  • Encourage high-quality, coordinated, patient-centered oncology care.
  • Support integration across inpatient, outpatient, infusion, radiation oncology, and surgical oncology services.
  • Provide mentorship and clinical guidance to physicians, APPs, nursing staff, and other personnel.
• Quality & Accreditation:
  • Oversee oncology quality initiatives, track outcomes, and drive performance improvement efforts.
  • Ensure compliance with Commission on Cancer (CoC) standards and accreditation requirements.
  • Monitor clinical quality metrics, peer review activities, patient experience scores, and operational benchmarks.
  • Advocate for patient safety, regulatory compliance, and evidence-based oncology practices.
• Operational & Administrative Leadership:
  • Collaborate with hospital leadership on oncology operations, staffing, workflow optimization, and service integration.
  • Engage in budget planning, operational strategy, and resource development.
  • Support infusion center operations, scheduling optimization, and clinic efficiency initiatives.
  • Act as the primary physician liaison between oncology providers and health system leadership.

Qualifications

• MD or DO from an accredited medical institution.
• Completion of an ACGME-accredited fellowship in Hematology/Medical Oncology.
• Board Certification in Medical Oncology is mandatory.
• Eligibility for unrestricted medical licensure in Virginia.
• A minimum of 5 years of clinical oncology experience post-training is strongly preferred.
• Previous leadership experience as a Medical Director, Associate Medical Director, Program Director, or oncology service-line leader is preferred.
• Demonstrated experience in program development, clinical operations, or oncology growth initiatives is highly desirable.
• A commitment to multidisciplinary collaboration, quality improvement, and patient-centered care is essential.

Compensation Range

The salary for this position ranges from $250,000.00 to $552,240.00 annually . In addition to the base salary, we offer a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision coverage (subject to eligibility), as well as wellness and retirement benefits aimed at supporting our employees and their families.

The stated compensation range is a good-faith estimate of the minimum and maximum salary for this position. Actual compensation will be influenced by specialty, education, training, skills, experience, certifications, and other relevant qualifications. This range may be adjusted in the future based on business needs or market changes. Compensation is not considered earned until it is vested according to applicable policies and benefit plans. The availability and amount of bonuses, incentives, or other benefits are subject to the terms of those plans and may be modified at the organization's discretion, in accordance with applicable law.
