Project Accountant

The Project Accountant is responsible for establishing solid communication with their assigned project team. Duties include analyzing owner contract and subcontractor agreements to extract pertinent accounting information, maintaining project‑related records (contracts and change orders), generating billings to customers, and resolving any issues in a timely manner. This role requires on‑site work at the Santa Fe Springs office and occasional site visits. After the training period, the position may follow the company’s Work From Home policy, allowing a hybrid schedule based on business needs and manager approval. Key Responsibilities Attend pencil meetings with owner and/or architect to ensure proper and accurate pay applications per contract terms. Respond to owner requests regarding any accounting‑related items on assigned projects. Analyze and process construction documents, including contract value, total billed to date, and total remaining amounts. Process owner and subcontractor change orders. Process 20‑day California Preliminary Notices. Collect and track subcontractor and supplier releases. Prepare, maintain, file, and release any necessary mechanic’s lien or bond. Manage purchase orders. Monitor subcontractor compliance with insurance, city licenses, and qualifications. Process subcontractor payments. Process accounts payable and reimbursable expenses related to assigned projects. Prepare cost reports. Research and resolve invoice problems. Ensure OCIP/CCIP and CRA/PLA compliance requirements. Create, maintain, and monitor reconciliation reports requested by corporate accounting or project staff. Collect unpaid customer invoices. Monitor unbilled costs and report to management. Identify opportunities for additional billing and report to management. Close out projects upon completion, including final subcontractor payments, change orders, releases, etc. Investigate project variances and submit variance reports to management. Review certified payroll reporting. Required Skills & Qualities Flexibility, adaptability, and effective coping with change. Self‑motivation to learn, investigate, and understand. Commitment to doing what the job requires to be done right. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business, or equivalent. Minimum of 2 years of accounting experience in the construction industry. Proficient communication, interpersonal, analytical, and organizational skills. Experience with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, CMiC, and Textura. Self‑management skills and ability to work with limited supervision.
