Certified Surgical First Assistant

Responsibilities Assist with cleaning, shaving, and positioning patients on the operating room table. Prepare surgical instruments before and after procedures, maintaining instrument counts with the registered nurse (circulator). Monitor the surgical team to maintain a sterile field during each procedure. Pass instruments and retract tissues to help surgeons visualise the operative area. Operate suction machines and diagnostic equipment, and learn operation of new instrumentation depending on specialty. Assist with wound exposure and closure, acting as a surgical technologist when required. Provide adequate hemostasis, suturing techniques, wound dressing, and drains. Assist with knot tying and other procedures under direct supervision of the operating surgeon. Pull physician preference cards and ensure equipment availability and sterility for cases. Select appropriate instrumentation based on patient age and size. Prepare patients, position them, and perform surgical preps according to protocols. Ensure accurate documentation in patient records per department and hospital policy. Navigate clinical information systems to perform job duties. Report and handle malfunctioning equipment in accordance with hospital and departmental policy. Monitor supplies to ensure availability for patient care and departmental operations. Maintain a clean and orderly perioperative environment, including breakroom and locker rooms. Recognize departmental problems and apply critical thinking to take appropriate actions. Prioritise patient care and organise activities in a logical sequence. Communicate effectively with the perioperative team while dealing with frequent interruptions in a high‑stress setting. Maintain positive interdepartmental relationships and coordinate patient‑care activities. Serve as a change agent by adopting new processes determined through quality‑improvement initiatives. Qualifications Minimum education: 2‑year associate degree in surgical technology or equivalent experience as an OR tech.
