Police Department Assistant

Job Summary

Under general supervision, this position assists with traffic control, school zones, jail support, courtroom security, and special events. Responsible for maintaining all traffic and support equipment. Assists all departmental divisions as needed. Reports to the Commander/Corrections Division.

Essential Functions

Directs traffic at intersections, accident scenes, fire scenes, school crossings, and special events or any assigned location.

Assists stranded motorists and citizen needs.

Provides escorts for funerals, parades, and oversized loads.

Performs animal control duties when necessary.

Supports patrols in the city on foot or in a vehicle.

Drives around the city locating road hazards which may include assisting citizens, Public Works, or other utility companies as needed.

Maintains support ATV, UTV, and high water vehicles, generators, chainsaws, and other small tools in a ready state.

Observes activities and looks for any situation that does not appear normal for the area, time of day, weather conditions, etc.

Utilizes equipment and supplies such as a midsize truck, in-car GPS system, phones, camera, car radio, walkie-talkie, vehicle unlock tools, tire jacks, power tools, etc.

Interacts with co-workers, supervisors, Command Staff, drivers, victims at crashes, citizens, merchants, etc.

Education and Experience

High School Diploma or its equivalent and one (1) year of experience in a job related field; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Successful applicants must pass a psychological examination, drug test, a full driving and criminal background check, a polygraph examination, and successfully complete an obstacle course within 90 seconds.

The City pays 50% of family coverage. The employee cost for family health, vision and hearing is $67.47 per semi-monthly deduction cycle and dental is $10.00 per semi-monthly deduction cycle. The total monthly cost for family health and dental coverage is $154.94.
