Technical and Professional Internships - Fall 2026

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) Technical and Professional Internships (TPI) Program provides students and recent graduates with the opportunity to be mentored by world‑class technical and professional staff who manage and operate research projects and activities. ORNL is the largest U.S. Department of Energy science and energy laboratory and offers experience in information technology, facilities and operations, human resources, marketing, graphic design, data analytics, cybersecurity, legal counsel, communications, finance, operational health services, and many other professional fields. Program Details Appointments are for 16–20 weeks during the Fall, with a 12‑month option for recent graduates. Participants are expected to work full‑time weekly, or part‑time for students enrolled full‑time in school. The start date is August 17 2026 and the end date is December 4 2026; dates may shift to fit academic calendars. Stipend is paid biweekly; the first stipend will be delayed and participants should cover personal expenses for the first 30 days. Applies: virtual or on‑site in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Compensation and Benefits Stipend (paid biweekly): $750 week for undergraduates, recent graduates (associate’s), or veterans with high school diploma/GED; $850 week for recent bachelor's graduates; $950 week for graduate students or recent master's graduates. Housing allowance: $250 per week. Travel reimbursement: up to $1,000 for round‑trip transportation if permanent address is more than 50 miles from Oak Ridge. Qualifications U.S. citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident. Must be a full‑time undergrad or graduate student in an accredited U.S. college or university (including community colleges) and have completed at least one academic term or quarter. Alternatively, a recent associate’s, bachelor’s, or master’s graduate from an accredited institution within the last two years plus 30 days. Alternatively, a U.S. college or technical institution certificate or diploma holder in a field directly relevant to the appointment, within the last two years plus 30 days. Veteran of the U.S. Armed Services with DD‑214 no more than four years prior to appointment. Cumulative GPA of at least 3.00 on a 4.00 scale (undergraduate and graduate combined OR graduate GPA alone). Minimum age 18. Application Review & Appointment Offer Applications reviewed directly by ORNL researchers with an available project. Selections made on a rolling basis starting about June 10 2026. Selected applicants must respond with an offer within seven (7) days. During the Appointment Commitment to the technical and professional operations of ORNL. Project must be completed in a manner and schedule that meets ORNL needs. All participants must submit an appointment reflection and develop a poster or PowerPoint by the program’s conclusion. Opportunities may exist to collaborate on manuscripts, conferences, poster sessions, and other publication events. Contingencies All awards and participation are contingent upon security access approval and completion of all contingencies in the offer letter. Participants must have health insurance coverage for the duration of the appointment and provide proof. DOE clearance approval required for laboratory access.
