The key role of the Technical Regulatory Compliance Engineering Specialist is that of principal contributor on a design or CPPD team responsible for development of safety and compliance related aspects of a product, process or both. This position contributes to Enterprise regulatory compliance teams, develops solutions for complex technical engineering problems, and may be accountable for the design or improvement of complex systems or processes. Specific duties include understanding, interpreting and participating in the development of various international standards, engaging in advocacy efforts on regulatory policies, conducting training for internal product system or component teams, facilitating control system safety assessments and product safety risk assessments, participating in design reviews and consulting with engineering design teams, auditing hardware and software assessments and participating in projects to further improve efficiency of the work group. What You Will Do: This position is focused on providing Control System Functional Safety and Machinery Product Safety Risk Assessment support. Contributes to Enterprise regulatory compliance and safety teams, as well as committees or groups outside of the company. This role has several peers performing similar activities in support of all Caterpillar products, who all report to a Functional Safety and Risk Assessment manager. Must demonstrate the ability to develop and perform on a complex project or program. Direct work with other units, suppliers, customers, and teams which requires the incumbent to demonstrate skills in negotiation, building consensus, and achieving compromise. Impact of decisions made by this position may be far-reaching, to include the project team or immediate work group, division, and/or business unit, suppliers, internal and external customers, and Caterpillar markets. Decisions may significantly impact warranty, patents, products or processes, technology, costs, sales, and customer perceptions. Keeping up to date with regulatory compliance requirements and technology and developing increased technical breadth and/or depth. What You Will Have: Data Gathering & Analysis Collects and synthesizes data from multiple sources using standard tools and techniques. Identifies relevant methodologies and their benefits to the organization. References and interprets best practice documentation for assigned tasks. Risk Management Recognizes key categories of business risk and their potential impact. Applies basic risk management practices and tools to mitigate exposure. Leverages organizational resources to support risk avoidance and control. Accuracy and Attention to Detail Processes complex information with a high degree of accuracy and quality assurance. Balances speed and precision while implementing cross-checking techniques. Contributes to continuous improvement of accuracy standards and practices. Helps resolve challenges through constructive teamwork. Decision Making and Critical Thinking Gathers and organizes relevant data to support informed decision-making. Applies critical thinking techniques to assess risks, benefits, and alternatives. Prioritizes concerns and contributes to structured problem-solving. Product Engineering Supports engineering development and validation for mobile machinery and systems. Troubleshoots technical issues and ensures compliance with engineering standards. Applies tools like SISTEMA for safety-related control system analysis. Product Design and Development Assists in designing and prototyping new products using automated tools. Collaborates with stakeholders to align design with functional and safety requirements. Evaluates production alternatives and contributes to continuous improvement. Top Candidates Will Have: Strong understanding of embedded control systems derived from engineering development or validation experience with mobile machines. Strong understanding of risk assessment methodologies and experience with earth-moving machinery risk assessments, such as Bowtie, LOPA, MCSSA or others. Experience with machinery functional safety standards such as ISO 19014 or ISO 13849 is highly preferred. Consideration will be given for experience with other functional safety standards, such as ISO 25119, ISO 26262 or others. Effective communication, spatial and conceptual design skills, and an understanding of customers’ needs and product application. Experience with international standards development organizations. Control system experience with technologies such as electrification, autonomy, SOTIF or artificial intelligence / AI. Understand complex technical problems and demonstrate the ability to develop creative solutions within a requirements framework. Technical leadership skills are essential. Though the focus of the job is technical contribution, project management skills may be required. Strong analytical and technical skills, with a deep understanding of complex engineering concepts and applications. Proven ability to communicate technical information effectively across teams, customers, and suppliers, along with demonstrated leadership and initiative. Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Agricultural, or Controls Engineering, or Computer Science from an accredited college or university Control System Functional Safety Certification from an accredited agency or will be trained and seek this certification during the assignment. Additional Information: Relocation assistance may be available for the right candidate. This role may require up to 25% travel. This role is onsite 5 days per week.
