Fertitta Family College of Medicine at the University of Houstoninvites applications for a faculty position in the field ofundergraduate medical education and student scholarly activity. This position will be part time at 0.2 FTE. Reporting to the Director for Student Research, the Assistant Director provides collaborative leadership and strategic oversightfor the Office of Student Research. The Assistant Directorfacilitates programs and operations that support medical studentresearch and scholarly activity, ensuring administrative functionsand program initiatives are effectively managed and aligned withthe institution’s mission, objectives, and compliancestandards. Responsibilities Advise and mentor medical students individually regardingscholarly interests, research pathways, career development, andacademic opportunities. Facilitate student participation in research and scholarlyactivities by identifying research opportunities, recruitingfaculty mentors, and connecting students with institutional andexternal resources. Ensure compliance with institutional, university, IRB, andfederal policies governing student research and scholarlyactivities. Collaborate with the Medical Student Research Association andother student organizations to expand student engagement inresearch initiatives and programming. Develop and coordinate recurring educational programming,including journal clubs, workshops, seminars, and professionaldevelopment sessions designed to strengthen student researchcompetencies. Lead the development, implementation, and promotion of innovativeOffice of Student Research (OSR) initiatives, including pipelineprograms, scholarly concentrations, micro credentials, networkingevents, research electives, student research portfolios, StudentResearch Day, recognition programs, and awards. Collect, analyze, and interpret data related to student researchparticipation, outcomes, and program effectiveness to supportstrategic planning and continuous quality improvementefforts. Design and implement assessment and evaluation processes tomeasure the impact of OSR initiatives and gather stakeholderfeedback to inform program enhancements. Develop and deliver faculty development programming to strengthenfaculty engagement, mentorship capacity, and participation instudent scholarly activities. Maintain and expand a comprehensive database of facultyexpertise, active research projects, mentorship opportunities, andproject needs to support student-faculty matching andcollaboration. Collaborate with institutional partners and academic departmentsto advance a culture of research, scholarship, andinterdisciplinary collaboration across the medical educationenvironment. Support strategic initiatives, accreditation efforts, reportingrequirements, and other administrative functions related to studentresearch and scholarly activity programs. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications Minimum of 3–5 years of progressively responsible experience inacademic medicine, higher education, research administration,student affairs, or a related environment. Demonstrated experience advising, mentoring, or supportingstudents in academic, research, or professional developmentactivities. Experience coordinating educational programs, workshops,seminars, or student-focused initiatives. Knowledge of research methodology, scholarly dissemination, andthe research process in academic or healthcare settings. Working knowledge of human subjects research regulations,Institutional Review Board (IRB) processes, research ethics, andapplicable federal and institutional compliance requirements. Experience collecting, analyzing, and reporting programmatic orassessment data to support decision-making and continuousimprovement. Demonstrated ability to build collaborative relationships withfaculty, students, administrators, and external partners. Strong project management, organizational, and communicationskills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities anddeadlines. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and database, survey, anddata management systems. Doctoral degree (PhD, EdD, DrPH, MD, DO, or equivalent) in arelevant discipline. Experience in mentoring and supporting faculty members in theirprofessional development. Preferred Qualifications Experience developing and managing student research programs,scholarly concentrations, pipeline programs, or experientiallearning initiatives. Record of scholarly activity, including publications,presentations, grant participation, or research programmanagement. Experience with accreditation processes and reportingrequirements in medical education (e.g., Liaison Committee onMedical Education standards). Experience facilitating faculty development and mentorshipprograms. Familiarity with statistical analysis software, assessmentplatforms, or program evaluation methodologies. Experience managing budgets, grants, or externally fundededucational initiatives. Applicants must have a PhD, MD or DO, dependent on the position,from an accredited institution. Physician applicants must possess anunrestricted Texas Medical License and board certification in theirspecialty. While exceptions may be considered, approval must beobtained from the Vice Dean of Education and/or the Dean of theCollege of Medicine and the Office of the Provost.
