General Counsel @ Global AdTech Platform

A leading global advertising technology company, powering one of the world's largest contextual advertising marketplaces with offices across the globe, the company serves thousands of publishers and advertisers, processing billions of ad requests daily. As the business continues to scale and navigate an increasingly complex regulatory environment, the company is seeking an experienced General Counsel to join its executive leadership team.

Job Overview

The General Counsel will serve as the company's chief legal officer and a key member of the senior leadership team. This individual will own the company's legal strategy across three primary domains: data privacy and regulatory compliance, litigation strategy and management, and commercial legal support. The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in digital advertising and technology law, a practical business-oriented approach, and the ability to advise confidently at the executive level.

Key Responsibilities

Commercial Legal Support

• Draft, review, and negotiate a broad range of commercial agreements including publisher and advertiser agreements, SaaS contracts, data licenses, and vendor arrangements
• Support new product launches and business initiatives with timely, practical legal guidance

Privacy & Regulatory Compliance

• Lead and own the company's global privacy compliance program, including GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, COPPA, and emerging international frameworks
• Advise product, engineering, and business teams on privacy-by-design principles, data minimization, consent management, and cross-border data transfers
• Monitor regulatory developments in ad tech, AI, and data privacy; proactively update internal policies and external disclosures accordingly
• Manage relationships with data protection authorities; lead regulatory inquiries, audits, and enforcement proceedings
• Maintain and update privacy notices, data processing agreements, and standard contractual clauses (SCCs)
• Oversee all litigation matters, including IP disputes, commercial claims, employment matters, and regulatory enforcement actions
• Develop and execute litigation strategy in partnership with outside counsel; manage the litigation budget and control legal spend
• Lead internal investigations and early case assessments; advise the executive team on litigation risk and exposure
• Coordinate document preservation and e-discovery processes across global operations
• Build and maintain a network of high-quality external litigation counsel across relevant jurisdictions

Legal Operations & Leadership

• Implement legal operations tools and processes to improve efficiency and reduce cycle times
• Report to the CEO and advise on legal and regulatory matters as required
• Foster a culture of legal and ethical compliance across the organization through training and policy development

About You

Required

• J.D. from an accredited law school; active bar membership in good standing (New York preferred)
• 10+ years of legal experience, including significant in-house experience at a technology, media, or digital advertising company
• Demonstrated expertise in data privacy law (GDPR, CCPA/CPRA) and a track record of building or scaling privacy compliance programs
• Substantial experience managing complex litigation and working with outside litigation counsel
• Strong commercial contracting background with experience across a variety of agreement types
• Excellent judgment, communication skills, and the ability to translate complex legal issues into business-friendly guidance

Preferred

• Prior experience in digital advertising, adtech, or martech; familiarity with the programmatic ecosystem (DSPs, SSPs, DMPs)
• CIPP/E, CIPP/US, or CIPM certification
• Exposure to AI/ML regulatory considerations in a commercial context
• Competitive executive compensation package including base salary and performance bonus. The anticipated base salary range for this role is $300-400,000.
