Job title-------------------Van Driver: Council on Aging Department-------------Council on Aging Shift Duration-----------Varies (not more than 19.5 hours/week) Job Location-------------90% outside (vehicle) Pay-------------------------$16.00 / hour Primary Task The primary function of this position is to provide transportation services to the elderly and disabled population in the Town of Mattapoisett, in accordance with the Town of Mattapoisett and COA policies, legal boundaries and any contract funding service regulations, abiding by all municipal, state and federal guidelines, regulations and quality standards and ensuring safe, courteous and professional behavior is observed in all situations. Essential Functions At the start of the shift, perform a pre-trip inspection of the vehicle and document the required logs and report any malfunctions and/or concerns to management as soon as possible. Responsible for checking the oil and window washing fluid levels at every fuel filling. Routinely check the tire pressure to be sure tires are properly inflated. Document any vehicle issues, including oil changes, route details, fuel intakes, and maintenance inspection logs. Accurately completes driver trip sheet for each shift with information including driver number, vehicle number, number of passengers, pick-up and drop-off times, mileage, destinations, etc. Ensure the van is clean, both inside and out. (Keeping the van’s windows, lights and signal lights clean improves safety through increased visibility.) A clean van represents the pride the driver takes in the van and symbolizes a positive image for the Town of Mattapoisett and the Council on Aging. Wear identification card indicating driver’s name and COA affiliation. Abide by all traffic rules and sound traffic practices. Drive the van only on hard public streets and highways and other normal access roads and driveways. The van shall not be used to pull trailers and no temporary or permanent trailer hitches or carrying racks shall be attached to the van. Carry an activated cell phone which must be “ON” and accessible during all trips (ringer or vibrate must be on). If driver is “out of range” from cell phone service, the driver must make every effort to contact the COA and/or management and inform them of the situation. Treat each passenger in a friendly, courteous, and professional manner and facilitate their access to/from destinations and offer information, direction, and assistance, as appropriate. Assist passengers in boarding and exiting the vehicle. Must not enter a passenger’s home. Document the name of each rider for each trip and complete any additional information as provided on the required form. Collect and fare and/or donation from riders, document the total amount received for each trip and submit to the COA. Remain either with the van, with the passengers or at the Council on Aging when on duty. Park the van at a destination that is specifically targeted for preferential van or bus parking, but if none available, parking should be at secure, off-street location whenever possible. When parking, all lights should be off and all doors locked before leaving the van. The Town of Mattapoisett and the Council on Aging are not responsible for any items left in the van. Must not deviate from the scheduled transportation route(s) and/or destination(s), unless approved by management. Must respond to requests from management for unscheduled pick-ups or drop-offs. Report any accidents to the appropriate Police Department or Highway Patrol and to the COA management. Never leave the scene of the accident, even if the other party involved does. Insist that the proper authorities be notified before moving any vehicles. Leaving the scene or moving vehicles may make it more difficult to establish fault and may result in the van driver being charged with the accident or no charge being made at all. Any accident must be reported by calling the COA office and/or the Director. An “Accident Report Form” must be submitted to the COA Director immediately. If a replacement van is needed, the COA will provide one. Perform other work, as required, directed or as a situation dictates. Common Workplace Regulations Report all accidents to the supervisor. Get first aid immediately for ALL injuries. Report unsafe conditions to the supervisor. Know emergency procedures, exits and alarms. Responsible for understanding policy / procedures as related to the position Must be able to follow oral and written instructions. Must be a US Citizen or legal alien and 21+ years of age Employees must wear Personal Protective Equipment and use safety gear where required. Apparel must follow the Town policy. Must adhere to Town polices and generally accepted professional behavior while performing job duties and /or representing the Town in any manner. Use proper lifting and carrying procedures. Seek assistance mechanical or manual over 50 lb Town facilities are “tobacco free” environment. No tobacco products are allowed in Town buildings, vehicles, equipment or on Town property. General Job Requirements Specific Job Skills, Qualifications and Training Must read, write and communicate in English as it relates to the job and to the safety regulations. Must be able to access all levels of a site/building/structure and enter and exit from vehicles. Must be able to operate vehicles, equipment used to perform job. Must comply with all traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in proper operation of vehicles, tools and equipment. Must be able to perform all job functions safely. Must meet the performance standards for the job. Must be able to work the scheduled / assigned times and required additional times for the position. Must complete mandatory drug testing Must complete required Physical Ability testing, as required. Must submit to a background / CORI check and not possess significant criminal record, as determined by the appropriate authorities. Must have a valid Massachusetts driver’s license. Possess an official motor vehicle record that meets the recommended criteria outlined by our insurance carrier. Must have CPR and First Aid training and ensure certification is up to date for the duration of employment. Must complete required trainings, to include but not limited to:

• Accessible Lift Use and Passenger Securement (in person/every 3 years)
• Disability Awareness (online/every year)
• Defensive Driving (online/every year)
• Substance Abuse Awareness (online/upon hire)

Must be able to effectively communicate (verbal and written) with co-workers, patrons, vendors and others as it relates to the job tasks and safety regulations.
