Role Overview:
The Communications Specialist will provide communications support across a federal client environment, supporting a diverse portfolio of technology, program, operational, and organizational initiatives.
As a member of a broader Communications & Outreach team, this role will develop and execute a variety of communications products, including announcements, newsletters, presentations, intranet content, talking points, event materials, FAQs, and other audience-specific communications.
The Communications Specialist will serve as a flexible generalist across multiple programs and organizational areas, supporting projects and stakeholders based on workload and organizational priorities. The position will also provide backup communications support for enterprise technology initiatives, including application rollouts, training communications, and other high-volume activities.
The ideal candidate is a strong writer and organized communications professional who can manage multiple priorities, collaborate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders, and produce clear, accessible, and visually engaging communications products.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Experience developing documentation for senior federal stakeholders
- Document design and layout based for formal communications (i.e., organizational plans, newsletters, flyers)
- Strong writing and verbal communications skills
- Attention to detail
- Comfortable working with senior level staff
- Strong organizational skills, document management
- Prepare talking points and other executive-level materials for the FERC CIO
- Assist in planning and coordinating CIO events (e.g., Town Hall, Staff Forums, All Hands meetings)
- Create and maintain template for various communication types (e.g., presentations, reports, newsletter)
- Support the collection of metrics data and organizational highlights to produce communications that inform on CIO accomplishments
- Support development and maintenance of a guidebook for Communications standard operating procedures
Communications Support:
- Work closely with cross-functional teams in a multi-stakeholder, enterprise or federal environment.
- Strong writing and editing skills, with experience:
- Editing content authored by multiple stakeholders into a consistent tone and voice
- Producing clear, concise, audience‑appropriate communications
- Ability to apply and maintain style guides, templates, branding standards, and naming conventions.
- Document design and layout based for formal communications (i.e., organizational plans, newsletters, flyers)
Content Strategy & Experience Design:
- Collaborate with stakeholders to transform complex information into clear, user-friendly content.
- Structure content to support scanning, readability, and task completion.
- Develop and maintain templates, page standards, and content models that improve user experience.
- Ensure content aligns with branding, tone, and organizational standards.
Governance, Quality & Accessibility:
- Ensure compliance with governance frameworks, approval processes, and publishing standards.
- Perform quality assurance to validate usability, accessibility, and content accuracy.
- Apply accessibility best practices (e.g., WCAG considerations) in page design and content formatting.
Required Qualifications
Education and Work Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, English, or a related field.
- 4+ years of relevant professional communications experience.
- 2+ years of experience supporting federal contracts or working in a federal environment; experience supporting CIO, IT, enterprise technology, or program management organizations is preferred.
- Experience developing communications for multiple audiences and stakeholders.
- Experience working with technical or subject matter experts to develop clear communications.
- Experience managing multiple assignments and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

- Experience developing presentations, newsletters, announcements, talking points, and other communications materials.
- Experience with Microsoft Office, Teams, SharePoint, and PowerPoint.
- Experience with communications design and publication tools such as Canva, Adobe, or similar platforms.
- Knowledge of accessibility best practices for digital and document communications.
- Experience working within structured governance and review processes.

Physical Requirements:
- Ability to sit for extended periods while working at a desk or workstation.
- Prolonged use of a computer and keyboard, including typing and using a mouse.
- Ability to handle light lifting (up to 20-30 lbs), including office supplies, files, or small equipment.
- Frequent use of manual dexterity for tasks such as writing, filing, and operating office equipment (printers, scanners, etc.).
- Ability to walk or stand occasionally to attend meetings, interact with colleagues, or move around the office.
- Clear vision (with or without corrective lenses) for reading documents, viewing computer screens, and performing detailed tasks.
- Ability to maintain focus and attention to detail throughout a full workday.
- Repetitive motions associated with tasks such as typing, using a mouse, and answering phones.
- Ability to bend or stoop to retrieve files or office supplies from cabinets or storage areas.
- Occasional standing, reaching, or walking to attend meetings or use office equipment in different areas of the office.
