This is a superintendent-level, multi-project leadership position responsible for the daily execution of active jobs, including crews, crew leaders, subcontractors, scheduling, materials, equipment, quality control, shop and yard readiness, and field documentation. This is not an office-only project management position , and it is not a working-foreman role assigned to one crew or one jobsite. You will report directly to ownership and have real decision-making authority over daily field operations within approved project scopes, budgets, and company policies. We need someone who can make sound decisions, solve problems, hold people accountable, and keep work moving without every field issue having to go back through the owner. We are a small, growing company. The person in this role will be expected to know what is happening across the field operation and make sure our people, projects, equipment, and resources are ready to perform. About The Smet Companies The Smet Companies is a locally owned general contracting and landscape construction company based in Sandy Spring, Maryland, serving Montgomery County communities including Olney, Brookeville, Ashton, Rockville, Derwood, and surrounding areas, as well as Washington, DC. Our work includes general contracting, remodeling, insurance restoration, decks, porches, custom carpentry, hardscapes, outdoor living, masonry, excavation, drainage, landscape construction, commercial property improvements, and storm-damage restoration. What You Will Own Daily Field Production & Planning Plan upcoming work before crews are dispatched, including manpower, materials, equipment, subcontractors, site access, and project requirements Build and manage daily and weekly production schedules Run morning crew dispatch and assign employees, vehicles, trailers, and equipment Visit active jobsites regularly and maintain a clear understanding of where each project stands Coordinate material ordering, deliveries, inspections, and other field logistics Monitor labor, productivity, schedules, and job progress Identify problems early and make decisions to keep production moving Keep projects safe, organized, productive, profitable, and on schedule Escalate major cost, contract, personnel, or customer issues to ownership when necessary Support storm and emergency-response operations when needed Crews, Subcontractors & Hiring Directly manage field employees and crew leaders Set clear expectations for attendance, productivity, workmanship, safety, and conduct Hold employees accountable and address performance issues promptly and professionally Train and develop crew leaders, field employees, and new hires Schedule, coordinate, and oversee subcontractors Hold subcontractors accountable for scope, schedule, workmanship, and jobsite standards Identify staffing needs before they become a production problem Work with ownership to recruit, screen, interview, and select field employees Help onboard, train, and evaluate new hiresThe list contained ... Shop, Yard, Fleet & Equipment Keep the shop and yard clean, organized, accountable, and production-ready Maintain oversight of company vehicles, trailers, tools, and equipment Make sure crews leave prepared with the correct materials, tools, vehicles, and equipment for each job Coordinate preventative maintenance, repairs, and equipment readiness Improve tool and equipment tracking and reduce lost or damaged company property Stage equipment and resources for upcoming work Address preventable shop, vehicle, and equipment issues before they delay production Quality Control, Safety & Closeout Inspect workmanship throughout construction, not only at completion Verify work follows approved plans, scopes, specifications, manufacturer requirements, and applicable code requirements Catch problems before they become rework, callbacks, or customer complaints Maintain company quality and jobsite safety standards Keep jobsites organized and professional Manage punch lists, walkthroughs, and physical project closeout Make sure outstanding work is completed before a project is considered finished Customer & Field Communication Serve as the primary field contact for normal project progress and day-to-day construction questions Communicate professionally and directly with customers throughout active projects Address routine field concerns without automatically escalating everything to ownership Maintain clear communication between the field, office, and ownership Address problems directly and bring possible solutions, not just problems Have clear, respectful conversations with employees and subcontractors when something needs to be corrected Keep ownership informed of significant schedule, cost, personnel, or customer issues Field Documentation & Systems Maintain accurate daily project photos in CompanyCam Maintain daily progress updates and project information in Contractor Foreman Ensure accurate employee time tracking and material records Maintain required safety documentation Document field changes, jobsite conditions, and important project issues Make sure crew leaders complete required field documentation Help improve scheduling, job preparation, equipment accountability, and field systems as the company grows Qualifications 7+ years of relevant construction experience preferred 3+ years of experience supervising crews, subcontractors, and multi-project field operations Experience in general contracting, remodeling, carpentry, hardscapes, landscape construction, storm restoration, or related trades Strong understanding of construction sequencing, scheduling, job preparation, and field logistics Ability to read construction plans, scopes of work, measurements, and specifications Proven ability to manage people, solve field problems, and hold teams accountable Strong quality-control and organizational skills Comfortable using smartphones and digital construction-management tools such as CompanyCam, Contractor Foreman, or similar platforms Valid driver's license with a clean driving record and ability to travel daily between MD/DC jobsites Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work outdoors in varying weather conditions We are a growing small business, not a large contractor with a separate department for every issue. You need to be comfortable making decisions, adjusting priorities when necessary, improving systems, and stepping in when something needs attention. We want someone who brings experience and structure but is still practical and adaptable. You should know how a strong field operation should run and be willing to help us make ours better. What Success Looks Like Within your first 90 days, you should be able to independently run daily field operations, coordinate multiple crews and active projects, improve job preparation, strengthen employee accountability, reduce preventable delays and callbacks, and create better consistency between the shop, field, and office. At the start of the workday, you should know: Who is working and where each crew is going What each active job needs What materials, vehicles, tools, and equipment are required Which subcontractors are scheduled Where each project stands What issues need attention What needs to be prepared for tomorrow and the days ahead The right person takes ownership, leads by example, stays organized under pressure, thinks ahead, communicates directly, cares about craftsmanship, protects company resources, and handles problems instead of passing them around.
