Requisition No: 875645 Agency: Department of Health Working Title: OPS DENTAL HYGIENIST - 64962068 1 1 Overview This is a unique Dental Hygiene position with a focus on patient education, oral hygiene instruction, and community outreach. Responsibilities Maintain licensure as a Dental Hygienist, work with the Dental Outreach and School Based Sealant Program; perform limited hygiene services under direction of the Health Services Manager; educate youth and community members on proper oral hygiene; treat youth in school-based settings and limited office patients; travel to schools in Taylor, Jefferson, and Madison County School District and other community outreach facilities; use a state vehicle; maintain confidentiality and data security. Transport, set up and break down portable dental equipment; perform hygiene duties including calculus removal, gingival curettage and root planing, polish clinical crowns, place sealants and fluoride treatments; instruct patients in oral hygiene; chart findings in electronic dental record; place digital radiographs. Promote and conduct community outreach to educate community and children on proper instruction and the services provided through the school district and community partners. Ensure proper sterilization procedures, cleaning and maintenance of dental instruments, equipment, operatories; perform periodic testing and shocking of dental chair lines and water lines. Assist with administrative duties including collection and review of dental paperwork and records; process permission forms and ensure proper data entry of patient information. Advise parents or legal guardians of students with dental concerns and findings with recommendations and referrals; enter procedures and billing into HMS as instructed; notify supervisor of needed supplies; assist with OSHA compliance, manage biohazard material, maintain OSHA records and MSDS sheets. Participate in staff development programs; attend staff meetings and in-services to stay current on rules, regulations, procedures; complete yearly bloodborne pathogen training. Perform other related duties as required. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of principles and practices used to perform procedures as a Licensed Dental Hygienist; knowledge of diagnosing and treating injuries, diseases, and deformities; understanding of treatment alternatives, drug properties and interactions; preventive healthcare measures; dental terminology; correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar usage. Skill in using Microsoft Office Applications; skill in cleaning dental hygiene instruments and equipment; skill in educating others in preventative dental techniques. Ability to travel to surrounding counties to provide services; ability to manage time and communicate effectively with team members and clients; maintain 100% client confidentiality; maintain effective working relationships; lift up to 50 lbs for transport and set up of portable equipment. Qualifications Minimum: Active Florida Dental Hygiene Licensure, Valid Florida Driver's License, CPR ability; ability to travel to surrounding communities on a regular basis; ability to lift, transport, and set up required equipment; daily in-office or field work required. Preferred: 1–3 years experience as a Licensed Hygienist, 1–3 years providing dental services to youth with special needs, ability to speak basic dental terminology in Spanish, experience with testing and shocking water and evacuation lines for dental equipment.
