POSITION DETAILS

Career and Engagement Specialist (CES) at John Jay College supports the Accelerated Study in Associate Programs (ASAP) and Accelerate, Complete, Engage (ACE) initiative. The CES oversees local program initiatives that complement academic advisement activities to provide engagement opportunities for students that support academic and career competency growth. The CES serves as a resource to ASAP|ACE students and advisors with professional skills development and career‑related opportunities, monitors student progress toward career readiness, and represents the program at CUNY ASAP|ACE Central Office meetings. The CES reports to the ASAP|ACE Program Director or designee.

GENERAL DUTIES

This position will: Regularly assess students’ career development and post‑graduation preparation needs and provide engagement opportunities that support growth in NACE Career Competencies in collaboration with the program’s Associate Director, student academic advisors and the Career Learning Lab. Research, refine and create both on‑ and off‑campus opportunities for students to engage in NACE competency growth. Develop processes for completion and evaluation of skills and personality assessments. Collaborate with campus community and ASAP|ACE staff to develop engagement opportunities to increase student retention and persistence. Document and track student participation in engagement efforts, in relation to student retention and persistence. Connect new and continuing ASAP|ACE students to campus resources, co‑curricular, and engagement opportunities. Develop and facilitate student success and community/campus resource workshops on various topics. Coordinate with special initiatives and programs—such as STEM, Foster Care Initiative, Undergraduate Foundations, and International Education—to connect students to experiential learning and/or leadership opportunities.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in an appropriate discipline and four years related experience. The preferred candidate will have: Experience working in the field of career development, ideally in college settings. Significant knowledge of local employment resources and ability to match students’ needs and skills to appropriate employment. Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed. Strong organization, project management and facilitation skills. Ability to enter, monitor and interpret student data accurately. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office required) and aptitude to learn new systems.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

$76,937 - $86,741. Benefits include health plans, competitive retirement/pension benefits and savings plans, tuition waivers for CUNY graduate study, and generous paid time off. Staff also enjoys access to campus academic, arts and athletic programs.
