Location: Nationwide (travel required)
Salary: $140k - $200k DOE
R-2 Contractors is currently seeking an experienced and highly motivated Vertical Drilling Superintendent to lead drilled pier foundation operations on utility-scale power, renewable energy, transmission, and substation projects across the United States.
This role is responsible for overseeing all aspects of drilled shaft and drilled pier construction, including project planning, production, crew leadership, safety, quality control, equipment utilization, and client coordination. The ideal candidate has extensive field experience managing complex foundation projects, building and developing teams, and successfully delivering projects in challenging conditions.
We are looking for a leader who is hungry, humble, and smart —someone who takes ownership of project outcomes, prioritizes safety, develops people, and understands that successful projects are built through teamwork and accountability.
Responsibilities:
- Lead and oversee all field operations related to drilled pier and vertical drilling foundation projects
- Ensure health and safety remains the top priority on every project site
- Supervise and manage crews ranging from 10-30+ personnel, including subcontractors and specialty contractors
- Hold General Foremen, Foremen, and crew leaders accountable for safety, quality, production, and schedule performance
- Plan, schedule, and coordinate manpower, equipment, materials, and subcontractors a minimum of 6 weeks in advance
- Manage day-to-day project operations, including production tracking, equipment utilization, and workforce planning
- Coordinate closely with Project Managers, clients, engineers, inspectors, and General Contractors
- Develop and maintain strong customer relationships that contribute to repeat business opportunities
- Review and interpret project plans, specifications, geotechnical reports, and drilling requirements
- Ensure drilled pier construction is performed in accordance with project specifications and quality standards
- Monitor project budgets, production goals, and resource utilization to maximize profitability
- Identify project risks and proactively implement solutions to maintain project success
- Assist with project planning, constructability reviews, and estimating efforts when needed
- Communicate openly with leadership regarding project performance, challenges, and opportunities
- Mentor, train, and develop field personnel to strengthen the organization's future leadership pipeline
- Foster a culture of teamwork, accountability, continuous improvement, and professional development
- Minimum 5 years of experience as a Superintendent overseeing drilled pier, drilled shaft, caisson, deep foundation, or vertical drilling projects
- Minimum 3 years of experience as a Foreman or General Foreman in foundation or drilling operations
- Strong understanding of drilled pier foundation construction methods and execution
- Experience with utility-scale renewable energy, transmission, substation, heavy civil, bridge, or infrastructure projects
- Proven ability to manage crews of 10-30+ personnel and multiple subcontractors
- Experience administering project budgets ranging from $5M to $20M+
- Demonstrated success managing multiple projects and complex field operations
- Strong knowledge of drilling equipment, support equipment, and foundation construction techniques
- Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, geotechnical reports, and project documents
- Experience with production tracking, scheduling, manpower forecasting, and equipment planning
- Proven ability to develop, train, and mentor field personnel
- Strong communication and leadership skills with the ability to effectively manage teams and client relationships
- Ability to work independently while maintaining alignment with company goals and procedures
- Demonstrated commitment to safety, quality, and operational excellence
- Willing and able to travel nationwide and work extended hours as required by project needs
- Able to pass pre-employment drug screen, background check, and maintain a satisfactory driving record
- Experience with large-diameter drilled shafts, drilled piers, and deep foundation systems
- Experience working in challenging environments, remote locations, or difficult site conditions
- Familiarity with utility-scale solar, battery storage, transmission, or substation construction
- Experience with GPS, layout, surveying, and grade control systems
- Experience with HCSS HeavyJob or similar construction management software
- OSHA 30 or equivalent safety certifications
- Paid Time Off (PTO) / Sick Leave
- Medical, Dental, and Vision Insurance (fully company funded plans available)
- 401(k) with company match
- 5-Year Employment Appreciation Bonus
- Monday to Friday, with flexibility as required by project needs
If you're ready to lead challenging drilled pier foundation projects, develop high-performing teams, and contribute to some of the nation's most important power infrastructure projects, apply today and become part of a team that values leadership, accountability, safety, and excellence.
